You realy shouldnt have any lock-ups with that spec. I've got -

    Amd 64 3200+ (2GHz)
    GeForce 6600 512mb
    1Gb RAM
    Realtek AC'97 Audio
    Windows XP Pro

    and mine has worked flawlessly.

Check the game is using proper video and audio drivers first. If not specify your drivers by altering the game options. If they do match then:

Maybe something went wrong during installation? You can always reinstall RTW, and then try to play the Campaign.

If however you are 100% positively sure nothing went wrong, or after a flawless reinstallment the game still doesn't work properly, you can always try and fiddle a little more with the game settings. Let RTW auto detect the user best performance settings (the gears button in an options screen), and alter these settings afterwards.

If all this fails, try the CA customers support.

Dude, you've got a great system, what other games do you play on it? Something's funky to be locking up on you. Do you have enough power? I've found some of the trifling details can be eliminated for smoother gameplay--of course, get rid of grass and smoke for instance.

    Interesting question !
I recently upgraded my PC and put in a new graphics card. An AGP 512MB BLISS 7800GS. However, this gave me all sorts of problems, and I also needed to upgrade my power pack, which I did to a 500w peak load.

Now I assume on a new machine this shouldnt be a problem.

Also, as suggested, what other games do you have on your system and play. This might help.

What version of Direct X do you have ?

SirGrotius was suggesting something else (i.e that the original poster didn't have the specs) but you raised a more important issue....if you have a puny PSU, say a cheap brand name under 400w or an OK brand under 300w then you seriously need to get a new PSU. I had a lockup problem years ago caused by a PSU that wasn't powerful enough.
