Default how to mod legionaires to charge the target without using thier pilum

i have always got pissed by that you can't give your troops the command to charge the target with a simple double sword-click and that you have to click them to move at the enemy to attack without using pilum, i also lose my charge bonus when i do so.

is there any way to mod this?

just having a normal sword attack click function and then ordering your troops to use pila by using the fire at will function would be enough.

i tried to replace the primarary slot with the sword and the sec with the pilum but then it disapeared completly..

    any ideas?

Actually, you can order the legionaires to charge without the use of pila. Just hold the "ALT"-key when issuing the attack command.

well yes but it's kinda strenous to go for the alt key every time so is there a way to make em work like normal swordsmen but keep the pilum function somehow?

Try removing the 'prec' from the pri_att line of the unit in export_descr_unit.

Prec stands for precursor which means they're thrown before the charge. Removing it should mean they just treat it as a regular missile weapon.

Yes, but then the legionairs would be glorified peltasts or whatever other Javelinman you can think of, and it would most certainly not remove the need to press ALT to order them to melee.

That's a good point - you'd have to swap the pri and sec weapons as well.

Or just set their ammo to 0?

i tried to remove the prec and yes as stated above they turned into missile troops.
setting the ammo to 0 would work but then you could remove the pilum completly instead. the point is to be able to give them the order to use pila as a special command.

after all its not that of a problem, just wanted to know if anyone knew how to mod it.

(second post because you cant edit your posts on this forum)

yes, i tried that to but it got pretty wired, i think that they lost their pila as you couldn't give the fire at will command i also have some memory of that they used their pilum as a MELEE weapon! as when i looked at them in custom battle they stood their with raised pila (had it over their heads, in preparing to throw position) but didn't throw it.

I do not think that ranged weapons can be secondary weapons. It might be a hardcoded thing, since noone actually anticipated that anyone would want to make a melee troop with optional missile capability the way you ant to do it.

i tried switching weapons too once i think, but it was a little off, had same issues.
i think the easy way secondary/primary weapon switching thing is just not very workable.
i dont mind much though...i just have a triggerhappy alt finger.
    pillage, plunder, burn...
