I encountered some interesting bedbugs when I spent a year in Kenya, but they never bothered me that much. Must have been well gorged.
I picked up some good advice from a guidebook when picking a room in a downmarket hostel: avoid the rooms with small blood splats on the walls; they're tell tale signs of bedbugs (or ex-bedbugs) .
