hi there, I'm back. sorta speak...

i dropped by occasionally, but my contribution here has pretty much ended...(mostly to do with the fact my life turned around...moved to a big city, training for my sports and school ganging up on me)
But here I am, askign a question, not really EB related, but I figured this was were I needed to be to get an answer.

I'm going on a holiday to Greece (Kos) in a few weeks. and I have really set my eyes on buying a Kopis (of some sorts) and I'm really willign to spend the money on it.
The problem though: Is it legal to take it into the airplane with my lugage (nót handbagage obviously) in to the cargo-compartment?

my dad said "meh, It's a souvernirs, you're allowed" but I'm not so sure...

And, If there's anybody here familiar with Kos (the hippocrates tree among otherts) does anybody know a palce to get one? for <150 usd...

Good to see you Jerry! long time no see! Greece is beautiful, Kos is a good choice. You should also go to Crete wich is verry nice too if you ask me. Anyway I think you take it with you as a souvenir but I don't know. Anyway if you want the weapons expert that's probably Urnamma.

i think as long as you check the luggage that it is in, there shouldn't be a problem. you could call the u.s. and greece customs depts and ask them.

If you're really set on getting one in Greece somehow, then I'd highly suggest you declare it in customs. Letting the airline know might just make them search you and your handbaggage... but not letting them know might throw you in prison...

Yeah right and that's why they let you drink baby-milk just to make sure it's not poisend.....It happend not to me but to someone i knew a couple of days ago.

Well, after what has happened yesterday in England, I`m sure they will make a hell of a scandal for going into the plane with your nails long.

Hell, they aren`t letting anyone with bottles of any kind of liquids or drinks getting in...

Oh, but they will let you pass with a 75cm sword, yeah right.

You will have to make some very long explanations for that in order to let you get that in the plane. Hope you can.

If you pack it in a suitcase you won't have a problem. Check with the airlines first of all, but as long you declare it when the suitcase goes through they can't stop you unless they believe it will be dangerous for a plane. A bit difficult if you can't get your paws on it.

Just don't carry it on as your hand-luggage.

Always check with the airline. Call up your customs department and find out, too.

Worse comes to worst, just ship it back to yourself.

(OT OT, I did that with my luggage once while coming back from a vacation. I had a stopover in the country to see some friends, didn't feel like lugging the luggage around, so went to the post office in the airport and mailed my $#!T back to myself. Worked out great.)

Actually I work at airport security and it is ridiculus what I have been taking from planes that come from the U.S.A for connecting flight into Europe. I have been finding lots of pointy sharp objects the last few days. Even large kitchen knives in handbaggage.

Seems everyone is focusing on liquids, it is like the Lockerby, then everyones attention shifted to plastic explosives.

The object you are taking with you:

A) is it legal in the country you buy it in?
B) is it allowed to carry it in a airplane cargo compartment?
C is it legal in the country you are taking it to?

If all are yes then you are good to go, but I would still let the customs know.

because there's a (not so subtle) differeance between checking it into cargo and carrying it on my back to my seat...

I hope that you figured out wich I'm planning to do..

I guess that it`s someone else that should take some reading classes. I was talking about going with that into the plane alltoghether, not as hand loggage and yes, that inluides checking it as cargo...

I don`t know if it`s possible for a passenger to get to the cargo bay of the plane in order that the sword become a real threat to the crew, or even if the cargo is transported on a separate plane... but the people in the airport check everything you carry, handbags and suitcases, and undoubtedly they will make some questions when they see the kopis on the x-ray-machine thingy...

Hope you get it through, I`ve been wanting to buy a falcata in spain and bring it to my office myself. I was dubious too about carrying it in the cargo compartiment, or shipping it through Fed-Ex, UPS or something.

That was the reason behind my comment.

The issue, I believe, was that you mentioned not being allowed to take drinks, while this is true it only applies to handluggage. In the next line, when you mentioned the sword, the comparison you drew between sword and drink was such that everyone thought you meant taking the sword on as handluggage as well.
