Thread: BI battles faster than Rome´s?

  1. #1

Default BI battles faster than Rome´s?

Is it just me, or are the battles in BI really way faster than the ones in RTW? I´m not only refering to kill speed, but unit movement as well. I´ve tried quite a couple of custom battles , and compared to RTW, units seem to race about the battlefield at a rate that seems similar to using the first time compression setting in RTW.

Oh, and is there maybe somewhere a skin/model pack for BI? Honestly, graphically, I´m definitely not impressed, a lot of units look very edgy and generally weird.

I've just had a look in the bi\data folder, but can't seem to find the descr_battle_map_movement_modifiers text file. Have you tried copying and pasting the one from RTW into bi\data directory to slow battle movement speeds down?

Currently developing Rome: Total Gameplay (RTG), an unofficial mod for vanilla Rome: Total War v1.5

Features: improved battles, new units to recruit, more buildings to construct, a modified campaign map, and much more!

I guess the movement speeds are the same. But there are no phalanxes and more cavalry, so maybe things seem more hectic. Kill speeds should actually be lower. IIRC, they raised defence stats and lowered elite missile attack stats.

However, I strongly recommend that you try Goth's All Factions Mod for BI. It has absolutely gorgeous skins. It keeps the core strategic set-up of BI (which is pretty good, IMO) but tweaks it a little to make it more fun. The unit stats are altered so combat lasts longer - higher defence and morale.

I think the battles are just more smoother in BI.

Thanks for the pointer, Econ, I´ll try Goths mod as soon as I have the capacity.

@Seasoned Alcoholic: The movement modifiers are, as far as I know, the same as in RTW, there´s no change there.

Well I'm play alot of BI MP and when I recently played a game of 1.5 mp a few weeks ago (after not playing it for ages) I was very surpised at how much longer armies hold on it. In BI killing the enemy general and/or getting a half decent flank in should cause a chain rout.

So maybe thats why there faster? (Its Barbarian Invasion and barbs morale tends to be pretty weak)

BI units had their run speed reduced by 10% for both infantry and cavalry.

CBR: I can hardly believe that, my impression is that the opposite is the case. BI seems to use the battle_movement_modifier from the RTW data directory, there´s no seperate one in the BI folder (sorry if I claimed different, Seasoned Alcoholic, after checking yesterday it turns out we were both right - you statig there´s no battle_movement_modifier in the BI data and I stating they´re the same)

Monarch: Yes, the battles resolve a lot faster as well, low defensive and morale values are widespread in BI.

It was not the terrain movement modifiers that was changed but the animations. Walking speed hasnt changed, only running speed. Im pretty sure some CA dev did say they had been changed and I did some tests that showed a general reduction of about 10% compared to RTW.

Edit: the changes might for the heavier units only as I didnt test light infantry.
