Racing:
Need for Speed: Porsche Unleashed

Strategy:
Medieval: Total War
Medieval 2: Total War
Starcraft

FPS:
Unreal Tournament 2004
Counterstrike CZ

Sure, M2:TW is not out yet but from what I've seen it definately ranks up there. It may be the first ever game I purchase at the New Release Retail price level. I tend to wait atleast 6-12 months for the price to come down as I've so rarely been as excited about a game as I am for M2.

2.) Medieval Total War
3.) Birth of the Federation
4.) Shogun Total War
5.) Lords of the Realm 2
6.) Neverwinter Nights

Yes, I'm a bit of a strategy nut.

It's tricky to pick out just 5 favourite games, but amongst them would be these:

Fallout 2,
Medieval Total War
Ultima 7
Far Cry
System Shock

Although to be honest, most of them I don't really play much now, put they're all pretty good (and old). Were I to explain my choices, I'd say this: the graphics might get better, but gameplay in an RPG rarely tops U7 and FO2. MTW provides endless hours of war and fun. System Shock is the most atmospheric game I've probably played (more so than it's sequel). And Far Cry is probably my fav FPS of the past 2 years, even if it gets a bit poor towards the end.

The X-Com series and Master of Orion 2 were close contenders, just based on the sheer number of hours I've spent playing them.

1-medieval total war/viking invasion (and several mods)
2-hearts of iron-2
3-lords of the realm 2
4-civilization 1 and 2
5-civil war generals 2

as you see most of my favorite games are old. i have some newer ones, but they seem to rehash the same old ground with fancier graphics.

i like building games and war games. i have only rarely tried a first-person shooters, too many buttons to remember and i find it irritating that i could do the real thing 100 times faster in real life (lets select the pistol, oh my, wheres that button!). most real time simulation games are okay but i get tired of them and put them away after a brief time. i can not be bothered to memorize long lists of keyboard shortcuts.

Medieval Total War/Viking Invasion

Civ 3 (have not got civ 4 yet)

Battleground: Gettysburg and Shiloh (by Talonsoft) (the only two that i bought from this series)

someone above said Birth of the Federation... that was an old, but cool game!

Warcraft 2 & 3 (never got around to getting Starcraft)

there are plenty of other games that looked very nice... but never got around to getting them, as the little bit of computer gaming time i have had over the last 3 years or so, MTW took up the far majority of the time.

Never played MTW as only found the series since I bought Rome after needing something to tax me.
Why do majority of people rate it over Rome ?

It's generally more challenging. The strategic map is risk style which makes strategic management easier (also, less hassle with popualtion and such) and allows for great big battles when someone decides to invade with two full stacks. But mostly because the tactical battles were slower and, well, more tactical.

In no order:

-RTW/BI
-MTW/VI
-Thief: the Dark Project/Gold
-Thief II: the Metal Age
-Thief: Deadly Shadows

Although Master Thief counted Thief I and II as the same game, I'm separating them, not only because I can't think of another game I play as frequently as all the above, but also because the feel of the two games is quite different.

Basically, I switch between the Total War series (don't have Shogun) and the Thief series. I'm a great fan of each. Total War makes the ultimate strategy/tactical games, and the Thief games (especially the first) are the epitome of stealth gaming in a medieval/technopunk setting, not even to be surpassed by Deadly Shadows despite "better" graphics and several years of advanced technological innovation.

....6 --> Microsoft FreeCell --> Most addictive game ever!

Reply
professorspatula 02:43 08-23-2006
Heh, Freecell can be addictive, especially when you're on a run. I used to stick my music on (different tunes definitely affect my performance) and and see how many wins I could rack up, and if I started losing, I would have to keep playing until my session win percentage was level or above my overall win percentage, even if that meant playing another 15 games! I actually played it yesterday for the first time in ages, and ended up winning 15 or so in a row, desparately meaning to quit, but kept on going until I lost. Damn.

I can't remember if the task manager shut down cheat still works with Win XP, heh.

My brother used to be addicted to Minesweeper at work. Rather than earn his pay, he'd play Minesweeper! I think he managed to do expert in 109 seconds or something stupid, before having to give it up when a new computer arrived with a horrible non-responsive mouse, thus forever runing his chances of topping his best score.

Amazing how sometimes the simplest of things can be addictive.

I'm quite surprised there isn't some really retro enthusiast who's listed Rogue/Net Hack in their top 5.
