Well Man U have done what they did last season. Started a little shakily and then really turned on the pressure for the teams above them. Then opened up a gap. All that though with a host of injuries and Ronaldo playing inconsistently.

Edit: In other news. Looks like Citeh are set on getting Santa Cruz. That's all good and well. But, well their defence and defensive midfield positions are probably where they should be investing. And what's going to happen to the players in their top class academy? Some other clubs are going to pick up some very good bargains.

So IA what's your view on the Nolan transfer? I don't think it's a particularly good idea selling him, unless there's a replacement lined up to fill the gap.

Well with the acquisitions of Bridge and De Jong they've already added some strength to their backline and defense. That said they're a bit lacking in depth though, but with Zabaleta, Richards, Dunne, Bridge, Kompany and De Jong they have a considerably better defense than they had at the start of the transfer window.

As to the players from their academy, I'd reckon that we might see Evans, Johnson and Onuoha leave, but I'd say Sturridge will stay. He's got so much potential that City would be stupid to let him leave.

I forgot about those. Yes, I agree, it'll take a while for them to settle though, but transfers always do.

De Jong is good, but is he worth the amount they paid for him? I've never seen him play so... He's got to be better than Hamaan.

I've been disappointed by Zabaleta though, he's looked out of place on the right. The one game where I thought he was good was against Wigan where he scored, and he was playing in the midfield. It's a pity they sold Ćorluka, then they'd have a very strong back four (when Dunne isn't suspended that is).

De Jong is pretty decent, he's a dutch international...

Yeah, City could use an additional centre-back so that Richards could move to right-back. Zabaleta has been decent though in going forward, but nothing special in defense.

What are people's thoughts on Hoffenheim without Ibisivec? It appears that he's out for the season, and since he's Germany's top goal-scorer this year and has been extremely important to the Hoffenheimer offense what do people think their chances are without him?

I know most of you seem to follow Spanish and English football more than German, but hopefully people more learned than I will have some thoughts. They did beat Cottbus 2:0 today, but that is hardly an accomplishment.

It'll be tough. Didn't they get in anyone to replace him? But, if they keep playing the way they have and create chances they'll win matches. Anyway it's going to be tight at the top, especially since Hamburg beat Bayern.

They did get a striker from Bremen, but the guy wasn't a starter at Bremen, so he probably won't prove nearly as good as Ibisivec.

Sanogo? Really. He's a poacher, strong lad. Very composed and usually quite clinical. He's often on the bench for Werder since he has Rosenberg, Pizarro and Almeida to contend with. He's got a good international record, 8 goals in 11 matches. He'll do fine at Hoffenheim, he knows the league and he'll get good service.

Fair enough. I hope he manages to fill Ibisivecs boots, especially since now that Werder have pretty much decided to give up on this season I'm going to be hoping more for a Hoffenheim win in the end.

Yeah, it's been erratic to say the least.

Edit: Great play Bolton, thanks for beating Spurs and plunging them closer to the drop zone.

Edit: Three and a half hours until I completely despair.

Just seen this.

I think it was the right thing for both parties. He hasn't been playing well for a couple of seasons now and it was becoming virtually impossible to drop him, as he's the captain. He needed to move on to further his career and we needed him to move on to bolster our midfield. Although he will be fondly remembered as 'Mr. Bolton' it was the right time for this. Although a few million more wouldn't have gone amiss!

Anyway now the deluded ones in Geordieland will claim that the Champions League final beckons, my moneys on the Championship. They'd look well in Grimsby.

22 Barcodes? At least we wouldn't have to see, nor hear about them.

Edit: So teams for the drop? It's still wide open, but despite that I think it'll end up being the Baggies, Potters and anyone from 'Boro to Portsmouth. I wish it were the Geordies, Spurs and Man City. But, I don't think that'll happen. Citeh have strengthened, and the Barcodes and Spurs have enough experience to keep them barely afloat.

Edit: How have Spurs spent £70Mil this season and we don't even have £15Mil to purchase 1 (one) player?

Edit: I have a sinking feeling that Liverpool will use the money from the sale of Keane to steal out Arshavin from under our noses.

True true, yet makes me wanna cry, cry, cryyyyyyy!

I think he will do a good job for Hoffenheim. Well, at least I hope so. Hope they manage to beat Bayern and HSV.
Bayer Leverkusen is still on my list for winning the Bundesliga!

YES!

Edit: God, BBC is reporting that it has conflicting reports. Looks like the Arshie deal could be off.

Watching the last 4 games, we don't need defensive players. We dominated those matches but couldn't penetrate. We couldn't even penetrate bloody Cardiff. We need pace and vision to replace Cesc (2 more months), Walcott (1 more month), Rosicky (never).

Cheered me up.

Edit: Ruddy worst time to play Spurs too.

This did kinda cheer me up:

Aw man...

Hell of a business by the Spuds. A nice little earner, £8 million in six months. Arthur Daley must be their financial director! 'Er indoors is well pleased. Terry, Terry!

Scurvy this sums up more articulately what I mean about Arshavin:

Originally Posted by :

Forget a centre-back (Johan Djourou has solved this issue), forget a defensive-midfielder (Alex Song is good enough here), with Cesc Fabregas out we lack creative midfield players with the experience and attitude to create openings in games where the other team just won’t allow it, something that Arshavin will absolutely provide.

People will point to the fact that he’s only played in the Russian League or that he was marked out of the Euro 2008 semi-final by Spain, but that’s ignoring the outrageous talent that this guy is on his day. At 27 he is at his peak and with Arsenal as his first ‘big club’ he will have huge motivation to prove himself as a top-class player.

The physicality and harsh conditions of the Russian League will mean he will not need time to adapt to England, while the recent winter-break in Russia should mean his body is nice and fresh. In other words, he looks perfectly poised to make an immediate impact on this Arsenal side. And what an impact this guy could make.

I mentioned in the review of the Everton game that I felt this Arsenal midfield lacked leadership, that the obvious talents of Alex Song, Denilson and Abou Diaby were being too-heavily relied upon without having proper leaders to guide them on the pitch. And while Arshavin might not be a leader in the conventional sense, everything I have seen from him for Zenit and the Russian national team suggests he is the type of player who has confidence in abundance and leads by example, similar to someone like Zinedine Zidane. As such, his influence could be invaluable as the season wears on.

In terms of his place in the team, I would expect Arshavin to be used either as a right-winger in a 4-4-2 or as the most advanced attacking-midfielder when the manager opts for 4-5-1. His defensive abilities are not his strength, the real value will be his ability locate passes and shots that others in the squad cannot.

If you can’t already tell, I’m extremely excited about this transfer. I was absolutely delighted at the prospect of Arshavin joining before the start of the season and that delight has not faded. He is a class player who will add exactly what we need to a squad that is struggling to score goals.

Let's find out what can Quaresma do in England. IMO, nothing new. He'll just suck as usual and be relegated to the bench.

EDIT, best goal ever: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zFopSa2tom4

Arshavin is a real classy player, IMHO. Article sums it up pretty good. Russian league is much higher standard than it used to be, so it is something when a player is considered among the best there. Russian teams won UEFA cup twice in the last several years (Zenit and CSKA). They can't compete with the biggest clubs, the types of Barca and Chelsea, but they proved that they can take on all others and win. I'd say Russian league is 6th in Europe at the moment, after English, Spanish, Italian, German and French, ahead of Portuguese, Dutch, Turkish...

I think he would have been better off in Spanish league, but I believe he will make an impact in England, regardless.

Agreed! Quaresma is a good winger but not that good. He's one of those players with a huge potential but somehow they always miss their place in every team they joined...at Chelsea he will be warming the bench pretty soon...he's no good enough for a major club.
