    Default Plame leaker (finally) identified

It was reported today that Novak's source was Richard Armitage, a State Dept official.

That's probably going to make Wilson's lawsuit alot harder.

Well thank goodness for that, seeing as it was the only CIA leak case worth worrying about.

To think someone might have casually leaked something that could be construed by nutjobs as a serious partisan attack!

Oh well, now we can get back to not demanding investigations into who leaks state secrets.

State, STATE?!?!?!?! After all this?! I probably shouldn't most more; I'm vexed, terribly vexed.

It does bring a few interesting thoughts to mind though....

Armitage (obviously) and Powell (apparently) knew who the leaker was from the very beginning. Yet, they chose to say nothing despite orders from the Whitehouse for the leaker to come forward... why did they just sit idly by and watch the controversy grow and grow?

Also, it makes you wonder what kind of fishing expedition Fitzgerald was really on when he knew from the outset of his investigation who the leaker was...

Hmm. I've been pondering this a bit.

It seems that the big, enormous hubub some people raised about how this was some evil conspiracy by the puppetmaster Karl Rove to lash out against people who critized Bush was wrong.

Funny, isn't it? This was a huge story, it became imperative to many who normally love it when CIA stuff is leaked that we find this leaker and throw them into a deep dungeon.

And now we don't get a 'oops, I guess you all weren't Bush lapdogs'.

    Ah well.

Please note the absence of interest, even among frequenters of this forum.

The mission was accomplished with partial success, the rest is just fallout and ignorable as it does not support the overall campaign.

Well, I don't know what's going on in the first place. So before one starts giving sarcastic remarks it might be a better path to humour the ignorants like me first.

Well Antioch it goes like this .
Someone gets a job to investigate claims about Saddams WMDs , the administration put forward those findings as "proof" .
The bloke that did the investigating says thats bollox , that ain't what I found .
The press turn round and say you can't call it bollox as you are a muppet who only got the job because of your wifes job .
The wifes employers say , oi you can't talk about his wife its a secret .
The press say , it can't be a secret as everyone knows .
The adminisration say , what do you mean everyone knows ?
The press says , of course they know , we just told them .
The admin say , but how did you know .
The press say , you told us .
The admin say , no we didn't as its a secret and anyone who did tell you is gonna be in deep trouble .
The world says , pull the other one its got bells on .
The admin says , no really this is serious we need to investigate , we need the truth we need justice .
The investigation says , naughty admin , perjury and obstructing justice ,bad admin .

    The saga continues .
Oh and add in imprisoning journalists for not revealing their sources , even if the journalists didn't write about the wife , as they knew the story and the sources so they must be guilty right . But since the administration was the source and knew it was the source from the start surely they should have been jailing themselves .

Really Xiahou , and why would that be .....But officials at the White House also told reporters about Wilson's wife in an effort to discredit Wilson for his public attacks on Bush's handling of Iraq intelligence. Karl Rove confirmed to Novak that Wilson's wife worked at the CIA, and days later offered the same information to Time reporter Matt Cooper.
All this revelation about Armitage shows is that your Administration contains more idiots than was previously thought (if that could really be possible), hardly something for a blind loyalist like yourself to shout about is it .
In fact if you can recall your "told ya so" at the time (as was Gawains)was that nothing had been done wrong , no laws had been broken and Plame wasn't even covered under the covert status protections , so forget your "told ya so" as what you told was false .
Or is your memory failing you

I always liked what I saw of Richard Armitage. He made regular appearances on the UK's Channel 4 news providing a US State Department perspective on current events. The most memorable things about him were his physical appearance - he has an amazingly thick neck and a gravelly voice - he was every inch the grizzled ex-soldier - and how open-minded and candid he seemed. Probably too candid, I guess.

In terms of partisan scoring, Tribesman has just quoted the part of the piece that lept out at me.

    What about this?
The disclosures about Armitage, gleaned from interviews with colleagues, friends and lawyers directly involved in the case, underscore one of the ironies of the Plame investigation: that the initial leak, seized on by administration critics as evidence of how far the White House was willing to go to smear an opponent, came from a man who had no apparent intention of harming anyone.
Rove's confirmation, according to Novak, amounted to a response of "You've heard that too?" when asked whether Wilson's wife worked at the CIA. I guess that counts as revenge... on some planet.

And what laws were broken? The only resulting charge was against Libby for something that happened during the investigation. No one was ever charged for doing anything illegal related to the leak- let alone convicted. And we now know that the person who actually blew Plame's cover was an administration critic on Iraq and that he did it in passing- not willfully.

It would amuse me too if it wasn't so sad. The pseudo aristocracy in State really need to decide what State they're working for. Perhaps we should sell them to the UN and contract them out on occasion, they'd fit right in.

Why thank you. Seems they didnt work so well though as would you believe I was robbed at gun point 2 weeks ago in my house?

but on the rest , your "told ya so " is in the same league as Xiahou
The rest covers a lot of territory. Maybe you could be a bit more specific.

So sorry Gawain , I didn't realise thoughts and prayers for the departed were supposed to prevent criminality .

Sorry I took it as prayers for the well being of me and my family in general.

was that nothing had been done wrong
The only thing done wrong was Fitzgerald pursuing an investigation he already knew the answer to.

, no laws had been broken
None were and theres still no proof any where. Theres only the charge of purgery that has yet to be proven and it shouldnt have gotten to that point in the first place and this is after the fact.

Plame wasn't even covered under the covert status protections
    And she wasnt.
