Thread: Farewell to the backroom

    Default Farewell to the backroom

As some of you know, I have a love-hate relationship with the backroom. I've described it in the past as like a car crash - horrific to look at, but you can't take your eyes off it.

I don't care for some of the people in there and their opinions (on both sides of the political divide) and I don't like what the backroom does to me as a patron - I become a poster that I don't like very much.

And its got under my skin. I can't help watching the news, or sit in a sermon, or read an article, without thinking about how it will go down in the backroom (and knowing each individual response to it).

I've tried in the past to stay away through my own will, but like an ex-smoker, I keep finding myself drawn back to it, even though I know its bad for me.

But the final straw came when I was on holiday a couple of weeks ago. Away from the internet for a whole week, I found myself awake till 2am cos I was thinking about the backroom. And that's not healthy.

So a few days ago I decided to cut off the arm that was causing me to sin, as it were, and asked Ser Clegane to ban me from the backroom, which he kindly did (thanks SG).

So farewell to you all, have fun arguing about the same half dozen core subjects, and if you need me you'll probly find me in the throne room enjoying the selfless devotion to community exhibited by the likes of econ21, TinCow and Death the Destroyer of Worlds. So, if you want to argue about politics with a bunch of strangers on the internet and really make a difference, come join the Roman Senate.

    Good luck.
There are times I wish they’d just ban everything- baccy and beer, burgers and bangers, and all the rest- once and for all. Instead, they creep forward one apparently tiny step at a time. It’s like being executed with a bacon slicer.

Meh. You'll be back. We all need a break here and there. I've barely posted in the last week and only built up the thunder this morning to go back into the fight. Sometimes you just need to breathe some fresh air. Politics is dirty dirty stuff, but it can also be alot of fun.

I am well aware of what a right wing extermist that I appear to be, and I am sure I piss of plenty of members- I might even be on your blacklist.

The bottom line for me is that politics are not personal. Sometimes I let it get personal in real life and then I have to slap myself. I like everyone in the backroom despite some pretty low-blow debate tactics. Tribesman drives me nuts sometimes, but I like the guy anyway. Jag is a pure socialist who stands for everything that I resist, but I'd delight in sharing a NewCastle with the guy. Zorba has every opposite view of me on the political spectrum, but I would still call him a good Orgah friend. Lately, I can't even see eye-toeye with fellow conservatives.

The point is, take a break. Breathe the air. And come back when you're ready. You raise the level of the debate and contribute intelligent, respectful, quality posts. It's not like anything will change.

    Take care and enjoy M2TW.

You're not right wing. You're just a yank. Lots of yanks are like that. It goes with the territory.

MS, it's only a games forum free for all, within the limits of the site. I used to get worked up when I first frequented the backroom....I'm sure most did, but it's only a games forum message board. Perspective, old bean. perspective.

After a break, I'm sure you will be able to drop by every now and then and not get too worked up about the issues discussed in there (and thus, refrain from becoming, as you say, "a poster that you don't like very much").

A break from anything is always healthy :).
Don't worry, we'll keep a warm place for you in there, so see you around.

I've tried breaks before. But then I forget why I took a break in the first place, come back and end up going on another break...

No, being banned is the best way. If I want to go back, I have to ask to be un-banned, and I would be too embaressed to do that.

I can't even see the backroom listed on the forum, so I won't even by tempted by seeing some juicy thread title that I just gotta respond to.

The 2 other forums that I'm very prominent on both have no-politics rules, and are friendlier places for it. When people break those rules, they tend to fall out with each other. The only thing I'll really miss about the Backroom are DevDave and all the sports threads that get posted in there that shouldn't

    My Braves won today BTW...
Dude, you're a good and smart guy to see your problem and dealing with it. Ser's a compassionate man for banning you in order to assist you. Ser, Soly, Beriut, Sat, Kukri, shoot, well basically every mod here has been kind enough to give me a "break" from the action from time to time and to be honest its a great thing to take a vacation. Maybe one day I'll have the marbles to truly take the step your taking and kicking the backroom habit. I'm going to miss you as well my friend, but always know that like any other junkie out there, I'd prefer you, as a friend, to wallow in my own misery in that backroom!!! Get out while you can, but remember that the rat's nest of hellish nightmares and pretentious self righteousness will always have its door open to you (be strong and stick to your moment of clarity). I'm proud of you that you've taken this step, I'm just sad to see you go. With honor and love....

Weren't you meant to be staying out the Backroom for health reasons?

Anyway, I may have need of you Dave. In the Will of the Senate PBEM in the Throne Room, my character, Publius Pansa has the Fond of Ribald Rhymes trait Well, I've come up with one rude limerick, but I just don't have what it takes to be obscene, humourous AND not get banned whilst I'm at it. Thats a rare gift only you have mate

Anyways, I'll see you in the Entrance Hall next time you get banned ~:D

Ah, your character has that trait. I was wondering what possessed you to start emulating DevDave, it did seem rather out of character for Mount Suribachi.

Good luck with it all (Especially Publius Pansa)

I tried the Backroom a couple times, but it was even less rewarding than disagreeing with my wife.

    That should be a comfort.

You'll come back Suribachi. I know you will.

From the Master himself, what he had to say about the backroom.

Candy came from out on the Island
In the backroom she was everybody's darlin'
But she never lost her head
Even when she was giving head
    She says, Hey babe
Take a walk on the wild side

Mount Suribachi, you have always been a person with great integrity and I knew that reading your posts only good things would come of it. If the Backroom started affecting that, then it was a right decision to leave. I have left it as a mod and as a member and haven't regret it since.

    Let's argue over MTW2.
