Default Silent Hunter IV is official! Sim fans rejoice!

    http://www.subsim.com/ssr/sh4/sh4_interview1.php

Lengthy interview and fan Q&A section with the developers. I've quoted a few select passages...

Subsim: Back in June 2005 CNN quoted the NPD Group’s April sales numbers at 26,600 units. Is that accurate? What does Ubisoft claim for sales numbers for SH3 to date?

SH4 Dev Team: The best thing about a simulation title is that the amount of sales tends to remain constant each month. SHIII sells well even one year after its release. We estimate Silent Hunter 3 sold over 300,000 copies worldwide.

Subsim: Now, I know that actual work on the game is in the early stages so there may be features that are planned but do not make the game. With that in mind, what new features are you planning for SH4? Additional compartments? More engineering functions? New crew interaction and management activities?

SH4 Dev Team: First of all, crew management will have a different approach. We’ll go into detail on another occasion but it will require much less babysitting while still providing interesting choices and give depth to the men "powering" your submarine. It’s based on three watches system, a simplified version of what was in theory taking place onboard US fleet boats of the time.

There are many other features to be discovered but one of the most important we think will be the addition of a new multiplayer mode. We are very excited about it and believe this will boost interest in online games immensely.

Last, but not least, we’re aiming for a different campaign experience. Special objectives, events and many little (or not quite so little) things will serve to make each patrol memorable and unique.

Subsim: So, what's the main improvement planned for multiplayer?

SH4 Dev Team: The addition of an adversarial multiplayer mode – escort’s commander vs. player wolf pack – will greatly enhance the competition feeling and the online appeal. Also, we feel that multiplayer will be more stable overall.

Subsim: The original Silent Hunter included special missions such as pilot rescue and reconnaissance. Are these type of objectives planned for SH4?

SH4 Dev Team: SH4 will have both lifeguard duty and photo recon missions. And these will not be the only special missions in the game. You can expect commando insertions or supply drops to be required by HQ.

Subsim: SH3 was roundly criticized for the paucity of varied radio messages and traffic. Players familiar with the history of the US sub campaign in the Pacific will expect to receive Ultra messages and occasional directives from HQ. How is this being addressed in SH4?

SH4 Dev Team: The radio will be much more active this time around and the radio interface will be better, too. Players will be able to tune their radios to different stations (Tokyo, Moscow, Washington, etc), listen to music and receive news when the time is right. Concerning patrols and interaction with COMSUBPAC, we’re developing a mechanism to ensure feedback and directives from HQ without resorting to heavy scripting. We expect no one will feel alone at sea anymore.

Subsim: Which class of US subs are planned to be included?

SH4 Dev Team: The main types of subs we’re putting in are P-class, Salmon, Tambor and Gato. Obviously, the variations of these classes will be represented in detail, as with SH3.

Subsim: Describe the campaign feature. Will SH4 have the same style dynamic campaign that was successful with SH3?

SH4 Dev Team: No, of course not. We’ll have a much better campaign this time. We’ll do this, among other methods, through more varied patrol objectives and constant interaction with COMSUBPAC and special events that serve to keep you on your toes even in the middle of nowhere.

Subsim: There are geographic aspects of the Pacific war that are distinctly different than the U-boats Atlantic war, such as numerous shoals and reefs, uncharted areas (marked on the maps as "dangerous ground", etc.), and countless islands. Describe how SH4 will capitalize on these areas.

SH4 Dev Team: You can’t have most of the special missions without wading in shallow waters, where there is not much room to dive into when trouble comes! The game will take players close to land on many occasions, especially, but not only, in the SUBSOWESPAC command area.

Subsim: Will the player begin the game on Dec. 7, 1941 in Pearl Harbor?

SH4 Dev Team: Pearl Harbor is the start line of SH4. It is not decided at this moment whether we’ll allow the player to go on patrol a few days early – as it would be historically accurate.

Subsim: Unlike the German U-boat war, the US Navy was involved in a number of large-scale naval engagements, such as Midway, Battle of Coral Sea, Battle of the Philippine Sea, the Okinawa Invasion, etc. To what degree with major battles be a part of the SH4 Single Missions and Campaign?

SH4 Dev Team: All the major battles in pacific theater of operations will be represented and player may have a role in them. We’re not forcing him in the area in any way, but very successful players may receive orders related to those operations.

Subsim: What target release date has Ubisoft set for Silent Hunter IV?

    SH4 Dev Team: Q1 2007

I would have buy the #3 of the series, but Starforce was coming with it. Do you know if the #4 will have Starforce ?

I think Ubisoft dropped StarForce earlier this year.

Sounds great. I loved what I saw of SH3, but now it crashes every time I start it. I'll sort that out some time.

I too shall not rejoice until it is 100% confirmed that part IV won't have Starforce. Never touched part III for that reason, won't touch anything with Starforce with a 10 ft pole.

I never knew of the Starforce issue before I bought it, and SHIII gave me so many cool monets it is downright unfair for the competition.

I love the inclusion of special missions, naval battles (who wouldn't like to intercept the Japanese fleet on its way to Leute Gulf? Or Midway for that matter?) and the MP aspect.

I don't like that it is the Pacific. I have nothing against the US subs or their achievements, but with no convoys it is bound to be less intensive when hunting merchants.
Also, the Japanese merchant marine was way smaller than the British, so contacts will be rather far apart. I somewhat hope that contacts will be unhistorically upped a bit.

Love the radio! Could be fun to listen to Moscow in the early game, good old communist propaganda can't be beaten for amusement.

Dislike the current sublist. Where is the Tench, the Baracuda, the Narwhal, the S-class... Ok so the last three were rather marginal boats, but the Tench was a serious adition. And it saw plenty combat.
I wold love to play the Narwhal with it's two 6' deckguns. Beware destroyers! But it is actually fair it isn't represented (three boats I think).

No mention of Japanese boats... That was something I kind of missed in SHIII. And no mention of AI boats either (running into or rendezvous with them on patrol, joining attack on ports, whatever...). I guess they still haven't managed to create a credible sub AI.

I'm kind of reserved in regards to the new crewmanaging. Sure the old system was heavy and not terribly great most of the time. But I got a special kind of satisfaction when I saw that my Flak specialists reloaded and aimed a lot better. My work had payed off and that guy I had nursed along to become a good specialist was now repaying my attention. Splendid!

I wonder if the MP escort commander will control from a ship (and if sunk shift to another?)... If he is, then it is potentially possible for modders to create a surface version of SHIV. That would be cool.

I knew of the SF issue when I bought SHIII but was so hungry for a state of the art, quality naval sim I bit the bullet and bought the game. No regrets and no issues with SF (thank goodness).

Inclusion of Japanese subs would be really cool but it would serve little purpose other than to provide more exotic targets for players. Incorporating a huge 'what if' campaign where gamers could play the part of an Imperial Japanese sub commander embarked on an incredibly ahistorical campaign of convoy raiding would be incredibly cool but would require alot more money, time and resources to make it all work. 3D Models, textures, 2D graphics, sounds, music, etc.

Obviously the designers are going to compensate for Imperial Japan's historical shortcomings regarding anti-submarine warfare and convoys by making any given campaign in SH IV more challenging for than it was historically.

I doubt SH IV's crew management will do away with skills, stats, medals, promotions and the like. I think they're simply going to make it easier for gamers by having the crew operate in shifts preassigned by the player, thus decreasing the tedium of micromanagement on long, boring patrols.

To be honest I wish UBI had done the Pacific theater in SH III and saved the Atlantic theater for SH IV. Historically speaking the Battle of the Atlantic was far more dynamic, intense and challenging for German submariners than the Pacific theater was for American submariners and it certainly involved a helluva lot more naval and air assets from all the participating nations (with regards to anti-submarine & convoy activity). I just think SH IV, being a more advanced, complicated and polished game than SH III, should have been the title to deal with the Atlantic theater and not vice versa.

One thing for sure is that I'm looking forward to SH IV's MP mode and the inevitable mods for SH IV. Hopefullly some intrepid modders will convert SH IV into a total conversion U-Boat-centric extravaganza.

Silent Hunter III was easily one of the best subsims ever made.
Never had a problem with SF either but I'm glad that Ubisoft got rid of it.
But I don't really know about being americans.
Would be nicer if they got a proper german campaign up and running with wolfpacks and such.

Given how modable SHIII was I believe that if anybody is up to the task they can make a U-Boat comversion. But it will simply not be the same...

I can't imagine any Japanese convoys larger than 10 ships all together. If they make convoys that rival those in SHIII I will not feel it is right.

What I do expect is plenty of Japanese air cover from all those little islands. Way more than historically. At least I hope so, it was great fun to engage in Flak battles.

I hope that Japanese torpedoboats will be prevalent and actually be able to launch topedos. Those Elcos of SHIII were nothing more than gunnerypractice for my heavy flakgun.

I'm very very proud. Silent Hunter III is made in Romania, and it was an AWESOME game.

Silent Hunter IV it will be again made in Romania.

I can't wait for SHIV. SHIII is awesome in its own right, though. Starforce hasn't been an issue for me, either, and I was worried about it. I am sure SHIV won't have it as Ubi has stated they will not be using it any longer in their upcoming titles. Starforce is a VERY hot topic over at the Subsim forums. Many a colorful discussion there. With the mods for SHIII that are available, especially the upcoming Grey Wolves mod (best one out there, IMO) update, SHIII will reach a whole new level. I'm helping out testing it so I know things. Mods will help SHIII stay alive quite a bit longer. Subsim, hands down, has the best modding community out there. Anyway, SHIV will be a VERY welcome change of pace. I am very much looking forward to getting out of the North Atlantic. It is long overdue for a sim based on American subs. I'm so tired of sinking Allied ships. I want to be on a winning side for a change!

Starforce shafted by computer. I needed a complete reinstall. Also, possibly connected, SH3 was really, really unstable. But great fun. I haven't reinstalled it.

Ubi have ditched Starforce so SH4 should be clean.

Does the UK budget release of SH3 have Starforce? Anyone know, because if not I'll buy it?

Is SH4 going to be Pacific theatre only, because that doesn't really interest me to be honest.

KRAXIS there are many mods for SH3. You must have heard of the Grey Wolves Supermod. It has milchkuh, milkcow subs.

    http://uboat.net/types/xiv.htm

If you have'nt checked it out yet, it's here:
    http://www.users.on.net/~jscones/TGW/

This has tons of other mods combined into it. Still no wolfpacks but you can see subs sailing around in chance encounters and also near the resupply subs. Naturally in port you have your own flotilla's subs.

The game is extremely moddable and I've done my own little bit of modding. Modded the KMS convoy to 43 ships and then intercepted it off Valetta. Amazing battle. Love that game.

    Hey Kraxis, watch this video:

It's some subs and harbor traffic.

This one has a resupply ship, and dolphins (also a mod):

Sure I know a lot of the mods... I love the game after all.

But I'm a bit of a puritan. I preferto keep my game as clean as possible, or rather that the mods I use are simple gameenhancing mods.

So I have mods for more radio, German harbourtraffic (including Allied bomberraids later in the game, which is lovely when a Hipper and some Type 34s are around to defend the port), more skins for the merchants, added a few ships myself, modded the weapons of the various ships (that was a spinoff of my inclusion of a Large Merchant made from the German commerce raider).

I tried to change some convoys and even some individual ships (such as changing the Tugboat at Scapa Flow into the armed version). But sadly the editor claimed that a lot of things were wrong and it couldn't save the changes. That was odd since I hadn't made those changes... it even denied the original map. So I gave up on that aspect.

I also augmented the U-boats a bit. Especially my favourite boat, the Type IX. I always felt that the 105 was weakened, so I gave it more ammo and took a bit from AP to HE to make it the same in relative terms as the 88. And I removed the SS shots of course. Lousy crap!
And because I love playing around with Flak battles I gave the 20mm guns 20% more ammo (left the 37mm alone as they have more than enough already).

And some other changes such as pinupgirls in the radioroom (even dabbled with the famous fly-on-Dönitz from Das Boot, but it wasn't as fun as the pinups).

Nice. Did you try the Grey Wolves mod then ? Greatest game-enhancer ever IMO. Feels like a totally new game to me. Luckily I installed it on my 3rd patrol, and wow, what a ride Í've been having since.

The RND layer is tempremental and has a lot of bugs when you try to save. What I do is modify one single thing, save it (having backed up the original ofc) and the modify another and so on.

No. I tend to stay clear of major mods. Just like I only tried RTR for a short while (and found it lacking) and never even went for EB.

What does it contain? I know about the traffic and milchkuhe and other things (some of my stuff are brokendown from other moer substantial mods).

Btw, I also picked up a mod for better bowsprites, denser smoke and fire and more historical torpedo-/U-boatskins.

Let me tell you something. Splint camoflage is actually very good. Some of the British destroyers (the Hunts are the most notable) sports that at times, and if it wasn't for the 'lockcheat' I could easily miss them at times. Also navy blue is a pretty good camoflage in bad weather.
