Surveillance video recovered by Montreal police shows a masked man throwing a firebomb at the door of an orthodox Jewish school in an attack early Saturday.

The attack damaged the front entrance of the Taldos Yakov Yosef school in Montreal's Outremont neighbourhood.

The bomb started a fire but the damage was described as minimal.

Police said a neighbour heard what sounded like a window breaking just after midnight and looked out to see the main entrance of the Taldos Yakov Yosef school in Outremont in flames.

In the video, the man takes a few steps toward the entrance, then steps back to throw a lighted Molotov cocktail. He removes his mask as he steps out of the video frame, but his face is not visible.

Although officials of Jewish groups disagree, police have been unwilling to declare the attack a hate crime. In the absence of graffiti or other other evidence, it is being treated as an unexplained case of arson.

Even so, it has stirred memories of a firebomb attack that destroyed the library of Montreal's United Talmud Torah school in 2004.

A note left at the school said the fire was in retaliation for the Israeli army's killing of a leader of the Hamas militant group.

The following year, a 19-year-old man who worked part-time at Canadian Tire was sentenced to two years in prison for the attack.

Police tracked the man down through evidence left at the scene, including long wooden matches, kerosene and four plastic fuel containers made exclusively for Canadian Tire.

It's funny how we've had small scale, rather random attacks by people claiming to avenge Muslim deaths in the middle east or somesuch by driving over Americans, and officials stubbornly insist it has nothing to do with terrorism or anything.

A Q: would they call it random arson if someone molotov'ed a mosque? No, they'd have public servants tripping over themselves, climbing over each other to be the first to denounce this terrible hate crime, demanding investigations and why the native citizens of country x are so mean, vile, and racist.

The interesting thing is that this happened in Canada. Perhaps it was because of the Afghan offensive?

Last thing you want to do is say it is a hate crime and then find out someone took out an extra large insurance policy on the school the week before.

Concentrate on catching the person first, the motives may helpin apprehending them, but it is more useful in the court and in the sentence then handed out then in catching them.

I wish that were true. However there are numerous incidents, same city same time frame where whites have been charged with hate crimes against blacks and not vice versa. This was despite the fact that when the blacks attacked the white guy, they did so uttering racial slurs.

Geez, all this sarcastic "So the whites get it while preferential minorities don't!" thing is getting into me. Honestly, it was only maybe forty years ago right here in the US where if you're black you're halfway criminal.

It doesnt matter if its a hate crime its a hate crime. One of the biggest mistakes this counrty made was trying to make up the mistakes we made with race. Its only made it worse

the way i see it PC sentiments have reached the stage where they discriminate the MAJORITY for the sake of the MINORITY - treating minorities as equal is a good sentiment but the current trends in PC mentality are not treating them as equal - they are treating them better than the majority

Happens every once in a while. Montreal is one of the few places in the world with an actual growing Jewish community.
