Default Atari game maker shares suspended

Thought this was quite an interesting article.

Shares in Infogrames, the French video gaming company that owns the Atari brand, have been suspended in Paris.
Infogrames is expected to announce a restructuring, although the details remain hazy.

Infogrames is Europe's top video games maker, but first quarter sales fell by 20% despite better sales in the US.

Its games run across different consoles including the Sony Playstation, and best-sellers have included titles based on the film The Matrix Reloaded.

Other players in the fiercely competitive video games sector have experienced tough times recently.

Infogrames rival Electronic Arts reported a quarterly loss of $16m (£9m) earlier this year.

The Atari name has been associated with electronic games since the first ever products were released in the 1970s.

After being owned variously by Warner Communications and toymaker Hasbro the Atari name was sold to Infogrames in 2001.

Look what these bastards have done to Wales. They've taken our coal, our water, our steel. They buy our homes and live in them for a fortnight every year. What have they given us? Absolutely nothing. We've been exploited, raped, controlled and punished by the English — and that's who you are playing this afternoon Phil Bennett's pre 1977 Rugby match speech

ShadesWolf, keep in mind the details of the article. The current Atari company has nothing to do with the 'original' Atari company famous for its revolutionary '2600 Game System' and inexpensive personal computers (400, 800, 1200XL, etc.). The original Atari company either went out of business or was bought out by another company years ago only to have the copyrighted name bought out by Infogrames. Infogrames was hoping that the revived Atari brand name would allow them to cash in on its legendary status in global popular culture.

Speaking of Commodore Business Machines, what a tragic tale of 'the company that would be king'. Commodore had the world of personal computing at its feet with the Commodore 64 and instead of forging ahead, opted to milk it for all it was worth until its outdated design became a huge liability. Not even the spectacular and revolutionary Amiga platform could save Commodore from its own shortsightedness and idiocy. Commodore ultimately wound up shooting itself in the foot... and in the face!

I remember them well, I had so many commodores

As for Atari, I didnt know it was only a name/ Brand, I thought it was the original company, that had just been brought out by a larger one. You live and learn.

Wishful thinking on my part. It's funny how close Apple got at one stage to dominating the market until MS was helped by being more open to other PCs. Now MS is doing their best to lock down/license what parts can be used with their machines... its called security, but I'm not to sure about that it seems to be more about the immense lobbying power of the entertainment industry. So we can look forward to not just regionalised DVDs to artificially inflate prices we can look forward possibly to regionalised games and other forms of entertainment.

Anyhow it seems MS may be forgetting the very reason it got such a large slice of the pie in the first place.
