    Default A Good Find

So I was browsing the net, doing a routine abandonware search. *dons nerdy glasses* and I found out that microsoft recently released MechCommander 1 and 2 as abandonware.

    http://mechcommander.org

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

I've installed 1 and 2 plus the Expansion Pack for 1, getting about 400kbps on the bittorrent I'm using.

    Enjoy.

MechCommander 2 was definately a more worthwhile game than MechCommander 1. In MC1, assigning headshots was worthless because NOBODY got a headshot in if you assigned it. I put on godmode as a test and waited around for an hour while my Timber Wolf *tried* pounding into an enemy mech with a headshot. This problem was fixed in MC2, much to my relief, making salvaging new mechs (Clan = ) more viable.

agreed. I'm actually having much more fun fooling around with MC2, better graphics, interface, more mechs, and a better storyline IMO.

Anyway just thought I'd throw this one out here in case anyone decides to bite. It really is a good game, and after the first few missions, you need to use careful and precise planning or else your dead.

I still have both my MC1 and MC2 CDs. I never did get the expansions. :/

I am silently waiting for the Mech packs (Inner Sphere and Clan) from MW4 to be released as abandonware. As much as I hate freebirths, I still want to play around with IS mechs.

Man, was the whole MW2/MC an unforgettable experience... and Mercenaries had that fantastic orchestral main theme created for the final mission, the Luthien battle against the Jaguars...

Hmm, I liked Mech Commander 1 more, the Mechs were "cooler"
I should download the Gold Edition though, never got that one.

DOXBox is golden. I use it regularly for my old AD&D games.

The fact that it's a torrent makes me feel uncomfortable. Anyway, do people still actively play either online?

No worries, I cleared it with Frogbeastegg. Everything is Legit. (Once a Company releases a product's source code, it renders the game Abandonware).

In terms of storyline, is it worth playing 1 before 2 or should I just jump straight to 2?

It's nice to know the whole BattleTech/MechWarrior universe story in brief, but it's not required. MC2 is not a direct sequal to MC1, so you can jump in with no prior knowledge.

Is it possible to issue orders to the units in MC2 while the game is paused?

I've copied it and started using it as my avatar on a local forum... hope I didn't break any copyright laws...
