    Default Stupid Question about Emissaries

    Still working my way through and Early, Normal, English campaign and I have a stupid question to ask:

    Why can't my Emissary land in Ireland and bribe the rebels there? I have ships and ports in my English and French territories and I can move an invasion force there, but not my Emissary.

    I would rather bribe them than fight those gallowglasses with a one-way army as I am about to mix it up with the Spanish and/or HRE (hopefully not at the same time!)

    Simple answer: There's no port in Ireland. Without ports in the departure and destination provinces Emissaries cannot travel by sea.

    You will simply have to invade first.

    Hey Maharajah!

    Caravel is unfortunately correct. Without a port in Ireland, you cannot dispatch Emissaries or other agents there. They're one of the few places that you have no choice but to invade.

    Gah! I figured it was something logical like that. Thanks for the help.

    Guess I'll just have to slug it out and then sit there until the port gets built.

    My bigger question would be, why bother? I almost never take Ireland, if at all, for the reason given. If you don't mind having troops stranded for while there, fine, but do you really need it. Isn't that province more rebellious as well (like Scotland)?

    I always take Ireland, and proceed to train Kerns and Gallowglasses. These, with Fyrdmen make up the backbone of my early English armies.

    You might have to sit quite a time - I don´t think rebels actually build anything, no buildings, at least.

    I'm almost positive that they do. I haven't played vanilla in a long, long time, but I've seen building appear in rebel territories in mods.

    The Irish have some nice troops in Early and in VI/XL you can get some REALLY good troops (well, at least if playing the Irish).


    Reinvent the British and you get a global finance center, edible food and better service. Reinvent the French and you may just get more Germans.

    I think he means this:

    "slug it out" = take it by force

    "sit there until the port gets built" = start building a port and wait for it to be built before that army can be relocated and/or agents can be moved in.

    My advice is this. Put together a cavalry based force of 3 or four units of Hobilars and some Fyrdmen or Feudal Sergeants led by an heir or Royal Knights general (not your faction leader or sole heir). Also prepare an occupation force of peasants or UM. About 4 or 5 units should do it (depends on your units size though). Then simply invade with the first force, fight it out and start building the port. Find a suitable governor with high dread and/or piety. Drop in the occupation force, build watchtowers and town watch then pull the invasion force out. Watch the provincial loyalty (happiness level)! You can start disbanding part of the garrison as the province accustoms to your rule and new happy buildings (watch towers, border forts, town watch and upgrades, church, brothel etc.) are built. When you have teched up to spies, a spy in each provinces does alot to improve the loyalty there.
