Default HL2 mod - Eternal Silence

It's a full conversion mod for HL2. They recently released a beta, which i have to say is one of the most entertaining if frustrating games i've played in a while.

It basically consists of two capitol ships duking it out in space. The aim is to capture the other team's ship. Sounds simple? Yes. Easy? No. First you have to grab a fighter and fly to the other ship. This is made difficult for beginners due to the inverted mouse controls. And the fact that the enemy will typically have 5 other fighters flying about out there ready to blow you to bits. Then, if you make it to the enemy alive, you have to deal with ground troops, typically equipped with weaponry such as ion cannons, flamethrowers and tank busters.

All in all, a fun game. I recommend checking it out.

    Requirements - Half Life 2.

Cool! I love it when modders go that extra mile and opt to do something more than simply produce more of the same with new skins and weapons models.

It was one of my most anticipated Half-Life 2 mods. The initial release falls far short however. Due to the lack of any real capship/fighter/boarding action battle, there's nothing making it unique, and it's not really worth playing IMO. I didn't like the level design or style of the ship interiors, either.

Iron Grip: The Oppression came out a few days ago. Its initial release is much closer to a completed game, and it's very fun (and to my surprise, has more players as well). Unfortunately there's some serious gameplay issues and bugs.

The following is really offtopic, but do any of you know a good World War 1 shooter or mod, preferably one with an active multiplayer community?

It's only a beta release, so it's obviously not going to meet all your expectations.

Considering how difficult it is to implement 3D space into the Source engine, i'd say they did a pretty good job.

Yes, but compared to so many other mods, it's horribly insubstantial for a mod that was in production for several years. And some of the descisions made are strange, like one faction having 2 vessels and the other having none. I wouldn't actually mind if the other faction's vessels were present but untextured.

Think of Empires' first release. It was buggy (like ES), but had much substance. That was months ago. The Empires team quickly improved things, hopefully the ES team will do the same.

Zalmoxis, the only one I know of that has players is The Trenches (http://www.thetrenches.net/index.php?page=main) for Half-Life 1. There's at least 2 WW1 mods in production for Half-Life 2.
