I'm serious about this. We have two swirling controversies that threaten the Republican Congressional majorities this Fall. We have a House leadership that is defending itself against charges that they were aware of Rep. Foley's inappropriate behavior and covered it up. And Secretary Rice is attempting to fend off accusations that she had been warned of generalized but serious warnings over terror activity in the summer of 2001 but in her role as head of the NSA ignored them.
Just when things couldn't get any bleaker for the Republicans, just when people thought there couldn't possibly be a way out of this for them, along comes the wild man with the wild hair. Kim Jong Il doing what he does best: pissing off the rest of the world and scaring them crapless.
As the generally 'hawkish' foreign policy party, this couldn't have come at a better time for the Republicans. I can hear the party ads now.... "John Kerry himself said he would ask China, Russia and France for permission to defend ourselves against a nuclear armed North Korea. Do you really want the Democrats to be in charge when Kim Jong Il starts putting nuclear warheads on ICBMS and sending them to the launch pad?"
I mean is it just me, or is the timing on these things amazing?
(Ken Mehlman is the chairman of the Republican National Committee).
