When the battle mode starts the screen is almost completely black with trails of graphics glitches all over the screen. Maybe I should re-install because some file might have been misplaced or something.

Does this happen with two full armies or more?
If you can't display two full armies there's something wrong, I can tell you that without even knowing your specs.
Did you mod anything?
What's your AGP aperture and how much RAM does your Graphic card have?
What kind of CPU are you using?
Do you have a correct driver installed and do you have problems in other games?
