Default Sweet -Free!- Multiplayer StarSiege Mech Game Oct 18!

Okay, I admit I do not know from personal experience how sweet this is, but it looks pretty sweet:

The official site, with a good rundown on the features and whatnot.

Basically, its a MP game featuring Mechwarrior style 'Hercs' from the old game Starsiege, along with other vehicles, like tanks and planes, and infantry.

The best part is that its a completely new game, and completely free! No need to buy some game, as it is not a mod! The release for the 'ATR'- alpha tech release, is Oct 18.

The game is set in the starsiege universe, which features a war between humans and AI 'Cybrids' spanning the solar system.

Is it one of those MMO's where you join up in armies and fight against other armies or that sort of thing? If that's the case I'm definitely interested.

    Silver-
It's not massively multiplayer - it will have 32 or 64 people max - I think. But not like Planetside, for sure.

I should emphasize that this is an alpha tech release. That means it won't be as good as, say, a beta.

A friend of mine and I used to play Earthsiege back in the day, so I showed him the site as soon as I'd seen this thread. He downloaded the alpha release, and I was away from computers on the 18th, so I didn't. He said it sucked: some of the weapons weren't skinned, the graphics engine is poor (not even the same engine they'll be using in the final version), yadda yadda yadda. Essentially, it's a good thing that this is an alpha release, because that still leaves me with some modicum of hope that the whole thing won't suck.

Oh, it is most definately an alpha, running on the old Tribes 2 engine (torque).

The textures and models of hercs and weapons aren't bad, though few.

But the game is laggy and crash-prone. They will release a small patch soon (week or so) that will adress some of these stability issues.

Imagine getting a 1-2 (or more) year old version of M2TW.

Those not tolerant of such releases would do well to wait until the release on the new engine. It can be fun, though.

I thought it looked nice and familiar. I pretty much lived in that game for a few years of my life.

EDIT: AAAARGH! It took two hours to get it to 90%, and then one of my games BSoD's on me!

    Damn!
