Default General Comments and Concises about M2TW

Since you guys have seen many screenshots, videos, previews, blogs and comments about this game, I wonder what your overall view of this game is. This is because I'm too lazy to find every thread possible to come to the conclusion.

From the comments I read, I can see that hardcore and loyal fans of M2TW are pretty disappointed with the progress.

Depeneds on which loyal fans you talk to. I still know several people buying this game. (yes some just so they can mod it). Still I would keep in mind this forum is not even half of the loyal fans of total war series. Just a few vocal people.

Some are disappointed but I also think if you look you'd see some of us are excited. Some by the game, some at the possibilites of mods with this game.

Personally i love it, but it's all opinion. I'd say wait till you test it in demo before you decide. Just my view.

I'm excited However I'm not a hardcore fan. But I am a fairly serious player of strategy games. I just tend not to nitpick as much as other people, and enjoy what I can. Personally I think MTW2 looks to be the best total war game to date

I'm positivly curious about the game. I won't praise it or bash it before I've played it however.

I'm very excited about the improved graphics, particularly with regard to combat animations and interaction and the individuality of each soldier.

I have one minor gripe that is CA don't appear to have moved away from the 'garish faction colours on every unit', Rome mods such as RTR and EB have proved that more subdued and realistic colour schemes can work without getting confused over which faction is which on the battlefield, admittedly there would be brighter colours in knights livery by the medieval period but I'm really talking about the faction colour that will adorn every unit (the horrible purple in the new Byzantium screenies for example). Even if the colours were maintained and just desaturated and darkened it would be an improvement, I'm just a bit fed up of bright greens, turqouises (thrace anyone?) etc.

Other than that it looks all good.

i believe that M2TW will turn out to be better than RTW but worse then STW

I am kind of disappointed because they left out the naval battle again.
The game looks like a Medieval mod for RTW.
I want to see good weather effect, I want the battles to have day and night cycles.
I shouldn't judge it before its release, there is still a chance that the AI could be absolutely amazing and wow us all. If that is the case, then I'll be happy too.

You're always gonna get whinging pussies who complain that the belt buckle of the lesser spotted outer mongolian halberdier should be brass, not bronze or something.

    It's a game, people!

I'm a big fan of all the series and have had it on pre-order for nearly 6 months. Can't wait.

The things said about the battles and AI sound promising, although reports from people having played a beta version and the video's don't indicate an improvement. I can only hope this is simply implemented late in the development cycle.

Graphics look nice, it's a good thing the scenery got some reworking, it was pretty dull in RTW.

As for historical accuracy, it's probably going to feel a little bit better than RTW, but I'm not expecting much in that regard.

In conclusion: if the gameplay is decent I'll buy it, I'll wait for the demo before I judge.

I find it generally difficult to form a definite opinion on a game that only exists in the form of short gameplay videos and screenshots. After it comes out we'll see.

I'll probably buy it. I enjoyed the original game so I think I will like this one. Still sad we can't do naval battles though. It always seems my naval officers are incompetent and can't win a single battle with out having at least a half a stack of ships. Plus I just can't wait to slaughter the Pope faction (I find the Pope as annoying as the Senate in RTW).

I have been a big time player of the TW series since the original MTW came out. I liked MTW a lot more than RTW. So far MTW2 looks much better than RTW did, but I personally didn't like Rome all that much. I am very much looking forward to MTW2 coming out, but still the one feature that I'm going to hate is how they handled the turns and years, and how they are going to be fast forwarding through a lot of them. I hate the 225 turns limit, even though that is probably plenty of time. I just enjoy taking my time through the campaign. I'm also looking forward to that feature getting modded so I can have a full, long campaign. So far, everything else looks good, of course, talk to me after I have played it.

Well the only ones I can think of it Burebista(Callatian), Soulflame and Smoke(from TWC) and all of them told that it was improved.
Callatian even said that M2TW was the best TW game he tried and that was just the beta.

Personally I'm really looking forward to this game.
Will easily blow MTW1 out of the water

About naval battles: remember this is just the Rome engine, going by CA's Revoltion (stw) > Evolution (mtw) > Revolution (rtw) > Evolution (m2tw) I fully expect the next TW game to have naval battles as part of one of the major revolutionary features, but then again I expect it to be Napoleronic, and without naval battles that sort of game would suck.

I'm hoping that the engine has further increased options for modders to work on. More variables may be irritating for the designers, but a boon for the modders.

Once the graphics have been redone, all factions unlocked, irritating units have been removed I'm sure it'll be a good game.

STW was so good as it was so simple - even then the ports were a disaster and you had to pretend that you couldn't drop an army off behind the front lines and wreck territory after territory with impunity.

RTW altered the game dynamics considerably. Instead of the AI effortlessly attacking from 6 different provinces at once, the different armies need coordinating - and yes, this system was found wanting.

IMO the series are some of the best games out there at the moment. My frustration stems from what could be added and what could be done, but won't be as the time it takes to add even the possibility of the subtleties that I'd like would probably reduce the profitability of the game.

Are you serious about the 225 turns limit?
Are you sure that is not just the short campaign?

Yes, there is a 225 turn limit on the full campaign and it will no longer be in years, just turns (thats my understanding anyway, sometimes i just dont know what im talking about).

I will definently but the game and play it for a while, but if its anything like rome i expect to get bored of it after a while. So I plan to download a total conversion mod (ORTVS ROMANI looks very promising ), as they tend to be better than the actual game. I am very excited about the new graphics engine too.

What would you consider a "hardcore and loyal fan?"

Someone who plays the game and loves it, or someone who plays the game and bitches about it constantly.

The things I have seen in it make me happy, there are things I don't like, but they can all be easily changed by myself modding for a few minutes.

Hardcore and loyal fans are basically people who loves the game. Loyal is just a tint above the hardcore level fanwise as they are loyal and will continue to support the franchise, while hardcore might just leave and play the ones they loved (RTW was no good so they revert back to MTW or some other retro RTS game).

Can someone make a mod that would make the campaign longer?

Or maybe there will be a cheat to set the years back. And give your generals great stats. And spawn a enormous army in single turn. Or make elephants gargantuan. No! Get the grandmaster guild building with a single command line!

Um. After beating the game fair first. Or not. It's my game.

I hope they have a Rome shell equivalent...

Does anyone know if MTW2 will carry on some of the cool features introduced by BI? Such as night battles, swimming etc. I think they really improved over the original Rome in this respect but I don't get to enjoy those features because I don't really like any of the BI factions so I don't play it :(

Play the XGM. It can use the BI.exe; you get the BI features in the RTW setting.

From what I understand, the game is being optimised to run for 225 turns in that scripted events etc will occur for the first 225 turns. Whether you have or haven't achieved your faction's victory conditions by this point, you will be allowed to carry on playing past 225 turns - it's just no 'new' stuff will happen.

At least that's how I've seen it explained in other threads...

Those who don't like it probably don't have comps good enough to handle the game right on high settings.

I don't. I meet the minimal requirements, my processor (3.0GHz) and video card with 128Mb memory are OK. But my 512Mb RAM is definitely not enough to enjoy huge battles smoothely. I'm afraid my comp won't handle the game under Windows XP... XP takes up so much RAM that I'm not sure if I can even run the game. :(

So I'm looking desperately for some sour grapes. First of all the historical period... I prefer Rome and ancient times. When it comes to historical realism... conquering the whole Europe proved impossible in the Castle age. The English were entangled in wars with France for long centuries and didn't manage to win. Germans could not act as one, divided into many factions and provinces. Medieval Europe was divided into small counties, dukedoms, etc. For Europe the times up till the XIV/XV Century were not times of national empires. Perhaps that's the reason behind so few turns in the campaign... you just don't have time to control the whole continent. Rome is set better in history, in the times when global domintion was really possible, even if it isn't historically flawless too. Egyptian units, much older than Roman times, look pretty cool, and I appreciate the coolness factor.

Other than that, sure, I'd love to play MII, I'll upgrade to 1024Mb RAM sooner or later and I'm going to buy the game, because it looks just marvelous. The graphics, animations, effects all of these are breathtaking.
