A more powerful Pope? Great, just what I need in MTWII.I don't care who I am, but I will attack the pope (If I'm Venice that means I can do it faster).
I really hope there aren't those ridiculous consequences for attacking the Pope that there were in Medieval 1. I think that you should get excommunicated and attacked by other Catholic factions.....which would discourage you from attacking the pope, but he shouldn't re-emerge with an ultra-powerful army every few turns.
This is because it is really unfair to the Italian factions. Venice is going to be my favourite faction and I want to unify the Italian penninsula without worrying about some @#$%&*# Papal Elite Army materializing out of nowhere right close to my richest home provinces.
Other factions can simply not attack the pope and be fine, but the Venetians, Milanese and Sicilians have to worry about the Pope trying to expand into their own provinces.
I'm also annoyed by the fact that so much thought and detail was put into the Catholic religion, but no others like Islam or Orthodox.
Other than that little rant, I think that the religion system looks really cool and I can't wait for November 11.![]()
Amen. But then again, there is always that satisfaction in killing him againhe shouldn't re-emerge with an ultra-powerful army every few turns..
That's why I go somewhere else for a while before attacking the Papal States.Even then I usually let him have Rome back and then come back later and crush him. Its a vicious cycle.I hope it doesn't pop up in MTWII. The Pope is just so annoyng (Why can't he just go away like the Senate in RTW).Originally Posted by CaesarAgustus

True, however I would argue that if the pope does not reemerge he should start off with a good army. There was one report somewhere talking about the pope is a actual unit now not just a political figure.
However keep in mind I'd have no idea how'd you defeat the pope. Even if you conquer papal states, the pope would still have his three nominee's all from different nations and the cardinals. I would think his chain of command should and would have authority to take back his land. Which would mean until you conquered every cathoilic nation you wouldn't be safe.
I don't think the catholic factions though should just go, "oh you just killed leader of my faith well that's fine i'll just continue life as usual."
Taking on the man with the pope hat has consequences (or at least it should)![]()

Given that the Pope is elected in MTW2, killing him just means that a new Pope will be elected so there is always a pope. I guess the only way to do away with the pope once and for all it to eliminate every Catholic faction so there are no more priests & bishops.
As for conquering Papal lands, does anyone know for certain if their are any actual provinces owned by the Pope? (screenshots would be nice)

I very much doubt the pope will be expansionist.worry about the Pope trying to expand into their own provinces
I wonder if you can give him captured provinces as a gift? Capturing a province from a rival Catholic faction and then gifting it to the church (Pope) could really put the cat amoung the pigeons...Originally Posted by Myrddraal
I remember doing this with the Senate faction in RTW and they went expansion crazy on the Gauls...
If I were to hazard a guess, I would say that Bob is right. There are no re-emerging factions as far as I know, thereby I doubt that the Papal faction will re-emerge if you defeat it. However since the pope is indeed a character on the map (like a priest), he himself may not even have to be killed for his faction to be defeated... Thereby my best guess is that the pope as a figure in gameplay is not completely tied to his faction, and that papal missions will continue to exist even if the papacy, as a political entity is gone.
Every man dies, not every man really lives.
i am impressed with what CA have done with religion.
it is a shame tho that "heretic" isn't a positive option that you can choose to pursue as a religious choice.
it would be great to lead England to the reformation in the late 14th century.
even better if your chance for succeeding in choosing a reformation option was governed by a distance-from-the-pope attribute similar to the distance-from-capital rule that already exists.
I agree, what i would do is mind my own business and if the pope expands you cant be excommunicated for defending yourself, you cant be expected to give away the city either.... or are we talking about after getting excommunicated? in any case, if it was before thats what i would doOriginally Posted by CaesarAgustus
I think the re-emerging pope in MTW was a good thing. Some seem to not understand how important a figure he was to people of the era and how many people were far more loyal to the Church than their state.
It is definately believable that, if a king attacked the vatican, people from all across Europe would volunteer to fight for him with the same religious zeal as they did in the Crusades.
I hardly ever attacked the papacy in my MTW games, as it just isnt believable.
...trying to remember to spell check...
I think an XP that goes into the Reformation would be great, especially like you say if they go into all the different demoninations - Calvinist, Lutheran etc.Originally Posted by Peregrine_Tergiversate
