Go to the family list (a button in your faction scroll). Click on the portrait you want to have as heir, and then click the button that says "set faction heir."

Also note that your previous faction heir will get a trait called "Disinherited", which is a deduction to his influence, i believe.

Another question along the same vein: If you disinherit an heir, then later rename him as your faction's heir again, does he retain the "Disinherited" trait? I know it's not likely to crop up much in normal gameplay, but I've wondered if anyone's ever tested it.

No, he does not retain the disenherited personality trait.

Another question based on this is whether the 'disinherited' trait allows that family member to be bribed more easily?

I think CA would have put that in the trait description if it did allow that. It does so for other things.

At least, I hope so. Just disinherited a nine star general a couple of days ago, and there are diplomats in the area...

Incidentally, what happens to bribed family members? Do they become part of the enemy faction, or "disappear," or does something else happen? Are they still considered part of the family?

Bribed family members are part of the enemy's faction. This goes the same for when you bribe an enemy family member.

I remember one time one of my generals was bribed by the Greeks. I bribed him back and promptly sent him on a suicide mission.

Ah, sweet revenge, even if it´s a bit expensive, some things carry a price not measured in denars.

But the other one (the one who got named heir instead of the former-now-again-heir) will gain it.

It gives a -1 influence penalty, but it does not affect bribing cost directly.

IIRC it is not possible to bribe back family members after the 1.2 or 1.3 patch, because it resulted in the family member appearing twice in the family tree.

Now that I think about it, it was a while ago. Can't remember if he was on the tree twice, though.
