Thread: PC Gamer Review

    Default PC Gamer Review

I saw the December issue of PC Gamer (US) in my doctor's office and they have a review of Medieval 2.
    They give it 90%.

I didn't have a chance to read the review, but it's several pages with lots of pics.

gleaned from the first couple of paragraphs:

    "bigger, prettier and more addictive"
AI is very good, but can be inconsistent

perhaps someone who has the issue can give a summary.

Well the only bad things they pointed out was minor pathfinding problems and lack of naval battles.
Other then that it was praises.

    Atleast that's what I heard.

Last time that happened we got angry messages with legal chunks from the PC Gamer UK staff member who had written the article.

    Hence our 'no scans' policy.

Don't do that, the mods will lock the thread up because of copyright violations. If you have this particular issue of PC Gamer simply paraphrase the article as much as you can and post it into this thread.

Haha, or type it all out

Or is that less than legal too?

Less than legal. Paraphrasing is fine; the odd quote is fine; but not copying out whole chunks verbatim.

What are you talking about? Of course it's legal to type out whole passages of text. Otherwise quoting anything anywhere would be subject to legal action, which would be completely ridiculous.

My understanding is that quoting is ok within reason - as I put it, the odd quote. But the context here is that someone wants to copy the entire article and that, I am pretty sure, breaches copyright. You will have to ask a lawyer at what point a quote becomes a breach of copyright - somewhere between 1% and 100%, I'll wager.

What about if the scan was in ""s? But could you summarise it for us. I have no PC gamer magazine within hundreds of miles. What did they say?

I'd trust loyal M2TW gamers to rate this game rather than some brand name reviewer to rate it.

Well they did say it was "more addictive" which is good. I assume next game since they do evoultion revoultion they will do naval battles for all you people waiting on naval battles. Maybe a expansion. Anyway I'm sure it's quite better then Rome.

Maybe true, but that's because M2TW is an evolution rather than revolution. For another such example, Vice City scored lower than GTA3 in PCGamer UK, but they have implied that VC is better at other times, such as one year's "100 Greatest PC Games". The score is related to innovation as much as it is to quality.

Let's not miss the point here. What ever the magazine every critic is biased including your and mine.

MP experience is what counts for me in TW series and if RTW was rated more then 90% not to mention how much better it could be made (seemed like beta version to me) then why to give any attention on such reviews?

Multiplayer was not included in the rating.

I don't know why, but a lot of emphasis is put on these game magazine ratings. If you go to .com, you'll see that they have removed all the ratings that the game magazines gave RTW.

LOL quote a bit of it in One post and more in the other! and then read it in sequence, what a loophole!

The ratings numbers are all rubbish anyway, they have any objective way of determining what is worth how much % points, except the reviewer's own opinion and possibly a little input from the editor (perhaps at the behest of the developer/publisher...). They are worth as much as any other literate person's opinion. The only thing these game magazines are good for are screenshots and demos in this case.

I agree the only weight reviewers have is when a collective pool is weighted and only then as a basis.

All a mag is, 12-20 people play the game, who can write well, then they write a story on what they thought. That's bottom line. There not game developers, they are not industry experts, there just columnists.

Now yes if 20 mags say the game got a 20% I would say be worrie.d But common guys this got a 90% and Rome got a 90 something %. So getting angsty about less then 9% difference in one mag, without seeing any other reveiws seems a bit out there to me. Play the demo, ask friends you trust. Then make your call. If you trust these forums wait, I personally am buying it regardless same as I did with rome, neither disappointed me. :)

I'm always dubius of magazines which give even terrible games scores of above 50%. Plus it's all so dependent on the reviewer's views. I've seen brilliant games given appauling scores and rubbish games given excellent ones. Also always worth watching where the money is coming from...

Most political debate forums I participate in, and they have LOTS of cut and pasting from other sources, use the fair-use standard of no more than 10% of the article/text and a link to the original included (30 seconds if an audio clip or an original)
