Biggest examples I can think of is Iggy and the Stooges on the album Raw Power--Search and Destroy has a lot of dead air that is taken up by the feedback and the guitar sounds like it is played on an Amplifier witha fuzz setting but that is just the sound quality. Also, Social Distortion's Mommy's Little Monster and Mainliner. Both great albums from my favorite band, yet Mainliner is not a bonafide studio recorded album. It is all recorded in basements and such.
C) I don't think old music is better, I just think 95% of the real talent today is undiscovered.
Think you've pretty much hit the nail on the head there! The current wave of indie-pop seems to be focused on bland, overproduced sounds. It makes the music dull! (see The Killers' and Razorlight's new album's for the best examples i can think of)
