    Default Things to remember when cooking

    Things to remember when cooking
    1)Pan lids also get hot in the oven they are mot magically immune
    2)Rice expands when boiled.
    This I forgot when cooking yesterday the result two burnt fingers and enough rice left over to feed ten people.
    Anybody got any cooking stories?

    I was trying to fry an egg, fat spat all over me, i dropped the pan and ran around screaming until help arrived, i havnt ever tried cooking again

    Learn the difference between salt and sugar.
    There are times I wish they’d just ban everything- baccy and beer, burgers and bangers, and all the rest- once and for all. Instead, they creep forward one apparently tiny step at a time. It’s like being executed with a bacon slicer.

    I can't cook but in reaction to it I try to minimise the difficulty of the recipe when I have to. Besides a good stomach also helps.

    My worst mistake was using a quarter bottle of amaretto instead of just a few sips when making tiramisu. But I don't regard adding to much alcohol to a desert as a mistake.

    Remember to read the recipe properly, adding 6 tablespoons of salt to pancakes because you read the amount of baking powder required for the recipe instead of the amount of salt required still screws up yur pancakes even if you dump sugar into them afterwards.

    Today I learned potatoes have to be in boiling water for about 20 minutes.

    Should I start my own restaurant now?

    I was a cook in high school and all thru college (part time the last 2 years) all at nice restaurants, and it has been my experience that you should always remember to cook a little extra for the bartender and the hot waitress. A free beer and some nice company after your shift is always nice.

    Restaurant rule to live by, if your not going to make $30 bucks an hour then you should eat $30 bucks an hour!

    While cooking at home it is best to know that baking chocolate is not the same as the candy bar kind.

    Never tip any spice or herb containing jar over your dish if you are unsure whether this is a sieve-like lid on the top to stop everything falling in your dish. Something which I did forget when I was making a soup when I was eight, and proceeded to tip the whole contents of a jar of dried basil into the soup, which my mum promptly had to fish out with a tea strainer.

    ^^^^^All pretty much the same.

    Oh, and another thing: always read the instructions for a recipe before you start making it. Something which I did not do one night, when I was making a stew. Having prepared everything at 9 pm (I like doing things late), and it was all boiling nicely in the pot, when I read step 5, which said "Leave to cook for 3 hours". I wasn't going to wait till midnight until I could eat it!
