Never tip any spice or herb containing jar over your dish if you are unsure whether this is a sieve-like lid on the top to stop everything falling in your dish. Something which I did forget when I was making a soup when I was eight, and proceeded to tip the whole contents of a jar of dried basil into the soup, which my mum promptly had to fish out with a tea strainer.

Why??? There's no such thing as too much basil

Oh, and another thing: always read the instructions for a recipe before you start making it. Something which I did not do one night, when I was making a stew. Having prepared everything at 9 pm (I like doing things late), and it was all boiling nicely in the pot, when I read step 5, which said "Leave to cook for 3 hours". I wasn't going to wait till midnight until I could eat it!

When throwing stuff directly from the freezer into a frying pan, make sure to brush off any excess ice present and/or make sure to cover the pan, otherwise cleaning the whole kitchen ensues.
