Each new release of Windows has been relatively smaller in 'wow' factor, but they have got better if you have sufficient hardware resources, keep virus scanners and malware scanners uptodate etc.

The reason I have Windows is to play games. After that I don't really care what OS I have or what hardware it is on.

If there was a Linux shell that I could go down to a local shop but it off the shelf and then install any new game with ease I would do so. At present it is just easier to get and use windows while having something that also works with work aps with ease... having to VPN to work at all hours to run admin programs on servers means I need something that will run those aps.

Same here. The only reason I use windows is to play TW games. For everything else I use Linux. I'm currently using Ubuntu 6.06 (Dapper Drake), but I've used Mandriva (Mandrake) and a few other such as Slackware in the past. This is also why I go through long periods where I don't play any TW, basically because I haven't booted into Windows for a month or two. It's a pity CA won't port their games to Linux, or at least provide an OpenGL render, which would make running under Cedega (WineX) at least a possibility.

    I quite liked MS-DOS 5 myself.

All these Windows and icons are rubbish.

Getting a game to run used to be a real challenge before you even considered video drivers and such. Windows and Direct-X make it far too easy to have hardware issues. It's just not the same when you solve them.
