Thread: Let`s speculate
-Praetor- 02:10 10-16-2006

According to this picture, and other information previewed before, how does the spartan unit look like? What equipment does it have?

Well, I can see that it has:

-A Pylos helmet
-Greaves in both legs
-A bracer in the right arm
-Around the neck, it looks like a cape
-Look to their belly, it looks like they have a musculed cuirass.
-Well, an aspis with a lambda on it

That`s all, anyone can find anymore details???

I would have loved to show the Spartiatai skin.

But the flame...no, intense inferno wars which will start, will take too much time for us to answer and use time on, instead of v0.8

Wait for the 0.8 version

Okey.

But can we speculate? Just a little, innofensively?

I`m not asking that you release the skin BTW, I understand your reasons, I just wanna play a little with the imagination.

It looks like RTR spartans according to the helmet.

Maybe he has a purple yellow striped tunic

Well there is no crest on the helment either.
And it looks like he is fighting with bare feet.

This is my reconstruction:

The Spartiatai wield a one-hand hammer, a celtic kilt, bare torso with a little beer belly, and a shield with a star-trek logo on.

The arguments will start anyway, so you might as well have just released it instead of taunting the fans who care about the Spartan skin.

Personally i wouldn't care if the Spartans weren't even in the game like they aren't in .74... But that's just me.

I doubt that the Spartans in EB will wield a hammer, wear a Celtic kilt, have a beer belly (remember they were soldiers and not drunken louts), or have a shield with a logo out of Star Trek on it. I am pretty sure that they would wear armour on their body too and if they were to wield a hammer they would do little damage by holding it like you have shown.

No shit? :P

Is it only me, or doesn't he use overhand formation? Did the spartans use over hand formation during this time span?

All hoplites used overhand formation during the period portrayed by EB.

With the exception of the Iphicratean hoplite...

Heh.. Who cares... Greek Cities gets owned by Macedonia straight away anyway... You'll never face more than one unit of them in battle since the AI only recruits levies and akontistai...

Unless EB has some mod that changes AI behaviour in what units it recruits?

Anyone here play Arthurian - Total War? One of the only RTW games that I have played that I have gone up against full armies of elites. This being due to the smaller unit size of their elite units.

All hoplites used the over hand spear attack.

... ...

To me the spartan looks like the vanilla spartan with the similar hat, but with the cloak on the back instead of a huge blanket wrapped around him. And his now visible armor looks like that baktrian unit on the loading screen.

Apparently Makedonia gets nerfed in 0.8, and justifiably so too.

Oh most definately justifiable... If you let Makedonia build up for 100 turns they just throw stack after stack after stack at you... And it's extremely annoying.

I concur. Anyhow, the greeks drank WINE, not water. So they're more drunken louts than the lot of us.

In the new build, KH is very aggressive, so don't expect them go get owned by the Macedonians so quickly any longer ;)

What? I do not remember Maks being very succesful in any (although not many) campains when I hadnt played as them.
In reality KH was crushed by year 260, but other leagues took fight against makedon.

And yes, in 1.5 AI trains more ballanced armies.

BDW I will probably create some kind of minimod when we publish v.8 with mak's situation extremely nerfed that will allow to play as them in more historical accurate manner. It can't go to the main build as it will make playing as KH and Epirus too easy.

Check my latest AI progression post on the internal board. The maks are doing quite well - stretching from Kallatis and Byzantion through Dacia and down to Corinth and now attacking the epeirotes (and sure to win) as well as Pontos at Nikaia. They were even trying to get Olbia too but failed in their first attempt.

This is clearly the spartans of the EB time period:

so... the spartans are a mix of super man, a teenage mutant ninja turtle, hannible off the a-team, a random girl and a person with a weird helmet? I can see that EB are really sticking to historical realism here

but they look like they have a vanilla style helmet but with less of the curtain wrapped around and perhaps a bigger shield? i dunno really its hard to tell

Yes, but they added lot's of water to their wine, like the Romans did. For doing that, the Celts considered them not to be real men, as the Celts themselves drank it without the water added to it.

Off topic, but ever heard of the theory that the Roman appetite for sweetners (a.k.a sapha, or wine concentrate) were one of the causes for their eventual downfall? It's about lead poisoning too, as the sweetners were made in lead cooking pots, and during the procces the wine would be mixed with bits of lead sulphate from a pot's surface - and so...

Another off topic thingy: ever read the entry on Southern States of America in one of the Encyclopedia Brittanica's? According to that, Americans were nearly full time drunken louts...
