Default Romani at war with Aedui

As the Romani, I find that I end up at war with the Aedui rather than the Arverni, and this is not very historically accurate. Its because the Aedui own Mediolanum, its the only Gallic city on the near side of the Alps, so the Romans are always quick to conquer it. This puts them at war with the Aedui and often leads to an alliance with the Arverni.

I think this problem would be solved by giving the Aedui the settlement in Helvetia rather than Mediolanum, as it would make Gergovia (an Arveni settlement) the nearest Gallic target for the Romans. When doing some research on the Galls, I found that the Helvetii were strongly pro-Roman as were the Aedui, and had strong links with the tribe. Therefore, would it not be better to give Helvetia to the Aedui rather than Mediolanum.

    They were??????

I remember that a lot of helveti warriors (mainly from the tigurinii tribe) allied themselves with the Cimbrii and the Teutons... the defeat that the romans suffered at the Garumna was at hands of Divico, a Helvetii chieftain.

Besides, the conquest of central gaul started precisely because of a Rome-Helvetii conflict.

    That`s what I knew...

Well, the Romans began their conquest of Gaul by giving the Helvetii permission for a peaceful civilian migration through their lands, then massacred them all. This was after they had let the Aedui and Arverni kill off each others best warriors, so there was no odds which Gauls they attacked. But really, if in the game you plan to fight the Gauls early, should you not be more likely to fight the Arverni?

I believe that Julius Cesar did actually the opposite, he denied pass to the helvetii across the roman territories, in order to incite them to conflict.

The helvetii turned their backs and tried another road in order not to start a war with the romans.

So, good old Julius started to chase the helvetii through aeduii lands, that is, outside his province, and in Bribracte he crushed the tribes and forced them (or what remained of the helvetii) to return to helvetia...

Though, i dunno why he aeduii have a town in Cisalpine gaul, so far from they heartland...

Was that cisalpine tribe allied with the aeduii?

    Ok, for starters –

The Cisalpine Gallic province in question here was historically held in this period by the Gallic Insubre (‘Home Dwellers).

The Insubres were a sub-tribe of the Gallic Aedui, which having fought their way through the Salluvii and their Arverni overlords, defeated the Etruscan Tuscani to settle in Northern Italy - happy to note that the Lepontic locals had already called the area after their name’s sake. In the 3rd C BC, the Insubre were still a nominal client to their Aedui kin (Northern Confederacy).

The Aedui were not pro-Roman at all. Not until the Romans declared war on their old enemy (Arverni alliance) in the 2nd C BC and defeated them (led by the Arverni king Bituitis) at the Battle of Vindalium, 8th August 121 BC.

The Helvetii like wise were not pro Roman until defeated / subjugated by Rome.

OK, but the Romans do end up fighting the Aedui in the campaign rather than the Arverni because of that one territory, it makes the Gallic wars historically inaccurate.
