Thread: Upgrade? or wait until windows vista?

Default Upgrade? or wait until windows vista?

Hm, I've done some research and it's come to me that Windows Vista comes out early 2007. Now, i do have a decent computer, but I'm sure this isn't the one i'll be playing on to enjoy MTWII to it's fullest. I was just wondering how many blokes out there are going to 1)play on their current comp 2) buy a comp now or right before MTWII and upgrade to vista later 3) don't get it until windows vista comes out.

For gamers vista is a total waste of time. DX10? Big clucking deal. Its an amazing system hog. Also this shouldn’t be posted here go post in hard and software.

I bought a new computer last month with the intent to avoid Vista. I see no reason for it in my game machine.

Default dear aunt lets set double the killer delete select all

I got a new computer in June. I am loving it so far.

Windows Vista is not really necessary unless you really want it. Most people are running the beta on dual boot just to see if it's worth the hype. So far, there's really nothing special. It looks cool and smooth though. Painfully expensive.*

As for Direct X10.0, don't worry. If you choose to keep XP, games like Halo 2 PC will simply install Direct X 9 L, which is simply the XP version the former.

    Hi PwnageBot2000,

    I just bought a new system. Dell Duo Core 2.66, nvidia 7950 GX2 1Gig, and 2 Gigs' of 677 Mhz ram. 2x 160 Gig HHD on a Raid 0.

Vista is not an issue for me as there is no way Microstoft will produce a an O/S that can't be run on current hardware. It simply does not make sense.

Additionally the game has been made under current O/S and hardware so there is no issue with Direct X 10.

Avoid Vista, stick with XP. Microsoft have really outdone themselves with Vista... *Sarcasm detector?*

I just bought a Dell XPS 700, Dual Core 2 2.66ghz. 2 GB ram, Nvidia Geforce 7950 GX2 with a 250GB HD. This thing is HUGE. And runs everything on MAX. Pretty cool. Should last me years, and can add things in over time. Has room for 3 more HD's, can set up a SLI if I want, though I doubt I'd need to. Etc.

Not true, games like Halo 2 PC & apparently Supreme Commander (think Total Annihilation remade by the same guys) are Vista & Vista only.
How else are they going to convince anyone to run that DRM infested, system hogging & expensive version of XP?

Ooh, pretty shiny interface!!! Here have a whole wad of cash M$

PS: this should be in Hardware/Software section (or bumped off to the 'general chat' section...)

OK, I know the situation with Halo 2 is still in the air. This is not the first time Microsoft had a chance to blink.

Well, seeing as I thought I could manage with Win98SE when I bought my comp a few months before XP came out, and in the last year there have been a number of games I can't play because they're XP only (including M2TW), I'm not making the same mistake again.

    I'll be waiting for Vista.

Yeah, we are so close to the release of DX10 cards and Vista that if you have already waited a while (like me) that it is really worth hanging on a little longer.

And to be honest if all you want is a kick arse DX9/XP machine you could still wait as the DX10/Vista release should bump prices down a bit (well graphics card wise at least which is a big portion of the self build cost these days)...

I read it was a Vista game on IGN I think, hope I just misunderstood that though.

I'm not paying $500 to upgrade when it not going to really help me much on playing MTW2. I already upgraded my GC to 256MB Radeon X1300 and it good enough..

I think I read somewhere ( I'll try and look it up ) that this wasn't the case.

Sorry for adding yet another voice to the question, but it had to be said

EDIT: I found it here, in this article

And this is the interesting part :

Microsoft plans on shipping its newest Windows operating system, Windows Vista, in early 2007. The new OS will feature DirectX 10, an updated collection of functions that software applications can use to access various system resources, including the 3D graphics card. The new version of DirectX incorporates a new version of Direct3D designed to streamline the graphics pipeline by reducing CPU overhead and moving more work to the GPU. Windows Vista will still work with current DirectX 9 video cards, but you'll need a DirectX 10 video card to run DX10-enabled games at the best settings.

We expect Nvidia and ATI to ship their first DX10 cards in the second half of this year, but you don't need to rush out and get one if you're afraid of game-compatibility problems. Game developers understand that it will be several years before the DX10 installation base surpasses the DX9 installation base. All games, including Vista exclusives Halo 3 and Shadowrun, will be DX9 and DX10 compatible for several years after Vista's arrival.

All my comps are self build and atm I am upgrading my cooling, case, and hdd's (2 Raptor Raid arrays) and monitor, while leaving motherboard, CPU and Graphics alone till post Vista. Also this way I get to spread the cost. Up till now I was on a crappy first gen 17inch LCD now even with quite an old graphics card I can enjoy Med 2 Total War over 20 beautiful inches!

Yah, sure directx9 is part of Vista but a dx9 Vista Only game won't run on XP.
The better devs will do support for both though :)

Despite what the Inquirer said (briefly before rescinding), DX9L is just the DX9 for Longhorn ie Vista.
There is no DX10 for XP & because Vista deals with drivers etc differently (+ to 'encourage' people to buy Vista) a game coded specifically for even DX9 on Vista will not work on XP.
