Deus Ex and Vampires were absolutely outstanding games but System Shock 2 is the one true god of FPS/RPG hybrids, IMO. The story and the horror are utterly gripping.

Of the proper CRPGs, I'd second the KOTOR recommendations. They are pretty close to Vampires.

Mafia was recommended here and so I sought it out. It's rather linear and without RPG type stats, but has a nice well-told story, tactically challenging combat and excellent atmosphere.

I think it is made by the people who made Vietcong, which has similar virtues - good story, strong tactical combat and oodles of atmosphere. What I particularly like about Mafia and Vietcong are the scale and the feedom - you don't feel like you are on tramlines and can wander out, choosing your own way to complete your mission.

People here also recommended Max Payne 2 to me as something with some similarities to KOTOR and story-based RPGs. I liked it a lot - great story, excellent production values and solid - if not very tactical (linear, run n gun) - combat.

These last 3 games are not really CRPG hybrids, I guess, as they lack the dialogue options & character development of an RPG. But they do immerse you in a role and have some similarities to Deus Ex.

Oblivion if your computer can handle it or upcoming Dark Messiah can be good choices if you like medieval thingies. Oblivion incorporate quite well aspects of RPG and FPS (first person slasher) combats are lot of fun if you play a warrior and Dark Messiah got less talk/quest but is realy better regarding the movements and different way of killing ennemies. Or, mabye try Deus ex 2, it isn't as good as the first one but still intresting.

Oh, I forgot to mention Prince of Persia : the Sands of Time.

I didn't like sequel, Prince of Persia : Warrior Within, though.

    Legio asked for fps games

Some more: The Thief games, incredible stealthgames dripping with atmosphere, at times utterly terrifying. Great open ended mission design, you got a job to do and how you do it is up to you. Didn't really care for the third, one mission of the second is basicly the same size of the entire third game

System Shock 2, needs no introductions on a forum full of rabid fans.

Ghost Recon series, if you liked opf this is opf lite. Great multiplayer.

If you can find it, Outcast. Exceptional first(or third) person adventure. HUGE world to explore, and a language to learn.

Far Cry, some people say it sucks, it doesn't. Great AI, the first game where you feel hunted. In the xbox version you become the hunter, great game as well.

Guilty plessure: The Suffering. Horror on death row YAY! It was promoted as a survival horror but it's a pure shooter at heart. Incredible atmosphere and very creepy enemies (designed by geiger(sp), who also did the alien), a pretty good story. What I personally like about this game, it's 'small' horror, no end of the world stuff but just a very evil place. What makes the combat fun is that you really destroy the enemies, you blow big fat chunks right out of them, everything gets covered with blood inculding you.

Penumbra, hey it's free! Scary done well http://frictionalgames.com/?q=penumbra

Seems like I'll be getting one of the KOTOR's then... Which one is the best, if I only intend to play one of them?
I might also get Vietcong and PoP:tSoT, but I've already played most of the other games suggested above. It seems like the kind of hybrid games I'm seeking don't grow on trees!

The first but many disagree. Thing with the second is that it's incredibly easy, and it lacks a good story. And the last hour is just unacceptable, really really terrible. It does one thing better then the first, light and dark are less obvious in a few occasions. Now the first is just fantastic, with a truely great plot, and a great 'I am your father moment' that I didn't see comming. Ok most people did, but I am just kinda stupid I guess.

Having said that, get Riddick, great hybrid game

Get the first - as has been said, it is more polished, less easy and there is also a natural sequencing. Playing Kotor2 first, would be a bit like watching Empire Strikes Back before the original Star Wars. Getting immersed in the world makes you appreciate it more when things get ... complicated in Kotor2.

But whatever you do, do not read anymore about the game and risk getting spoilt about the plot. It has the one of the best plot twists ever. I did not follow my own advice, so I knew it was coming but still found it jaw-dropping.

I might also get Vietcong ...
Get it if you want a pretty realistic shooter with a strong story and lots of variety. It's not a talkie like Deus Ex and Bloodlines, but is immersive and I find it has decent replay value - like Mount and Blade or SS2 I keep coming back to it for another blast of thrilling combat.

Seconded... that was a great game. As a bonus, it's playable in cooperative multiplayer mode over a LAN. My girlfriend and I had a blast playing it together.
