Thread: Best time to buy a new PC?

Default Best time to buy a new PC?

Well.. Right now, I have the right to upgrade the PC, and I can do whenever I want.. It is just that, I want to get the most out of what I'm buying, which is why I'm asking for a best time to buy it..

I was thinking March 2007.. Quad Processors will be out by then, so will be DX10 Cards (By both ATI and nVidia = cheaper prices), and AFAIK PCI-E2 as well.. Do you think the wait is worth it? (The wait as in not being able to play M2: TW till then)

    Thanks.

There is so much news/noise about Vista and DX10 that I think it's not worth thinking about until the tech-heads physically get their paws on the new stuff and give it a furious beating and post the results.

The way I figure, I neither want the headaches or the expense of "going DX10/Vista" until at least next summer. Until then, I'm sticking with my rig unless I come up with some extra cash and then get a good PCI-E system.

Well, you need to keep in mind that I can't and won't upgrade anything till further 3 years.. So, that means if all games start going the DX10 road, I will have nothing to play..

A, XP system seems to be the way to go for at least another year, so I suggest a long wait, or leaving the option open of upgrading your system (that you'd buy now) once dx10 has matured

If that's truly the case and you want DX10 or nothing, then for now do nothing at all. Unless you have beaucoup cash, in which case you can do anything you want.

Like I said, I'm not touching Vista and DX10 until the tech-heads with the cash for the new hardware beat the bugs out of it and offer up some serious consumer level advice and reviews on the various new components.

For what it's worth, my solution was to put together a good XP system with a honkin' big power supply, so's I can swap for a DX10 card if and when that makes sense. Seeing as we still haven't touched the outside of what PCI-E can do bandwidth-wise, I'm not stressed about the changing standard.

I'm not trying to be a smart alic but...

...there really is NO "Best Time" to buy a new system.

There will always be something to wait for...believe me, I have waited and waited

The best time to buy is when you have enough money to do it. By that I mean that you have enough money to buy just below the best.

At least when you do this, then you know you have a machine that will last for a reasonable amount of time.

If you don't have a budget to buy just below the very best then you need to save as much money as you can.

Unless you are "In the hardware industry" then as a consumer you need to just concern yourself with you own situation rather than waiting for things you have no control over.

There's about 4 cents worth of advise.

    Happy buying.

If it needs to last 3 years... Buy a nice tv and a games console.

The best time to buy is as far in the future as possible. But if you get lucky could last a while... I mean I got a P4 2ghz and processor tech hardly advanced much beyond it for ages. But if I'd got something just before Core 2 Duos came out, I'd be very annoyed.

The choice is a no-brainer really. Buy in 6 months and you know the system will work well for a good few years. If you buy now on the other hand, the system will become out-dated whenever DX10 becomes standard for games.
