    hey, i'm new to this community and to the whole total war scene. i've been reading your posts consisting of m2tw which i've been anticipating however i can't quite grasp how you play it yet. i started about 2 months ago playing RTW, and from what i understand, this is very VERY different. i'm going to be straight up and say that yes, i do suck at the game. i always read how you guys blow through the game very easily and it puzzles me a slight (this is singleplayer), however i was just wondering the main difference from MTW and it's gameplay to RTW. i know they're very different and RTW is pretty toned down in content, which dissapoints me slightly. i had a few questions that i hope you guys can maybe help me out with

    crusades..how do these work and benefit your faction? also the concept of jihad and such? also from what i understand MTW is much more difficult? i was wondering in what sense it is. could you guys give me a few pointers on this? i'll be posting here but i'm still trying to understand the conversion from RTW to mTW . if you guys can bear with my stupidity it'd be appreciated, thank you very much

    well the whole transition of RTW to the MTW play style is what i'm trying to grasp.

    MTW is generally much slower and strategic than RTW. Units move slower, battles take longer, and the AI handles itself much better on both the campaing map and battles. Generally much harder and satisfying, but both games play broadly the same way.

    It's basically the same, maintain a line, charge, go for the flanks and rear of enemy units if possible (you'll need to pin down the enemy unit first, or it will just turn to face you of course), listen to the advisor. You can use skirmishers to weaken a section of the enemy line, then punch through it with some heavy troops or cavalry, then divide and conquer. The key to winning is to disrupt the enemies' formation.

    Hiya, eefums, welcome to the board.

    Now, on to your question:

    The transition to MTW isn't going to be a huge change of style. Yes, you will now have to choose whether to have a city (money-focus) or a castle (military-focus) for a region. Yes, diplomacy will be more important. And yes, Religion is gonna be a big issue. But the mechanics are going to be the same for the most part. You will siege towns, you will still beat armies/

    Religion wasn't present in RTW and in BI, it was there, but not on a grand scale. In MTW, religion is an import aspect. Catholic factions aren't gonna be great mates with Muslim factions unless they want to have the Pope breathing in their neck. And if the good old Pontiff has a bad day, he may even consider you a heretic and urge the other Christians to attack you!

    Crusades are a bit like the senate missions in RTW. You are going to attack a town in far away land, you will get some bonus units (powerful crusading units like the Templars) for the job and you will gain prestige with Pope, which you can use to do more crusades (on targets of your choosing) or use it for attacking other catholic factions.

    The Pope is the Senate: he gives you missions and can be a pain in the backside when you ignore him. In Rome, you could wipe out the senate (it was a requirement to win the game) but in MTW, eliminating the Pope won't work (unless something changed).

    Regarding unit tactics, well, it is the Medieval period. You will some bad-ass heavy cavalry, but you will also see some bad-ass counters to those horsemen. Every unit class will murder one unit class, but be run over by another unit class. For example, swordsman are fabulous against spearman and pikeman. Cavalry on the other hand can ride down swordsman with relative ease.

    These are some aspects that are a bit differen from RTW. If you have any further questions, please post them and we'll do our best to answer them.

    One interesting aspect of missions in MTW2 is that they won't be only given by the pope. U'll get missions from the noble concile of your own faction, the guilds installed in your towns and other factions as well. Meaning, there will be some choice to make as what to do first.

    I guess some conflicts between your allies will eventually emerge from your own decisions, just like it was when monarchs had to make changes leading to war with old friends in order to get more powerfull allies.

    thanks for the welcome and the great help guys. i have a better understanding of it now.

    one last question..what should determine whether you have a castle or a economic town?

    you will want to have a fine balance of both, so that u can develope a good income, and also train your best troops, and raise armies to conqorr new lands.

    generally one would think as a good rule of thumb that border provinces would be best suited to military towns so that u can develope there defences in case they get besiged.

    towns that are deep with in your territory are prolly best to turn into economic towns due to the fact that they will most likely not be besiged. finally due to the huge monetary value of naval trade(assuming its similar to RTW), i would suggest converting as many costal provinces to economic cities.

    thanks everyone very much. i've just started MTW SP as denmark and i must say it's very fun and kind of dramatic so it keeps you interested. it's like a soap opera haha. i plan on sticking around too.

    The original MTW was one of the best games ever to have been installed on my PC and I sincerely hope M2TW is as good.

    I'm going to move this thread to the Medieval 2 section of the forum, since that's the game primarily being discussed here.

    In essence, Medieval 2 is going to take the period covered by the original MTW, except that it's using Rome's battle engine and campaign map (plus it's somewhat "souped up", of course). I can't really add much other than that, as our other fine members have already filled you in on the game.

    Oh, and welcome to the Org, eefums! May your stay here be long and prosperous.
