It's not a lie. It is big. And that's a reason to disable search there. Just disabling doesn't solve all problems (for this search engine), but it eases them.

I really and honestly expect, that the whole board would be rendered useless when it was enabled.

It really is huge. I think the Tavern has been specifically asked by the host of our website to not be cropped... it is so big that it is useful for timing how good modifications to the server(s) work... that means it is huge.

Well if it's that big and we can't search, imo there's almost no use in keeping all the threads. Ofcourse some should never die, but might it not just be better to put a search function on and keep only 20 pages (.com style).
Ofcourse only if there's a demand for it.

I thought the reason why it didn't show up on the "new posts" thing was simply because it wasn't active enough. Looks like the case is exactly the opposite of that!

I don't know much about these sort of things, but wouldn't it be less of a problem if users were only allowed to search for posts in a timeframe of their chosing of say, a year?

I don't know if this approach would work, but how about deleting or moving old threads? You could for example keep an area where you can store old threads, and there, disable the search function.
