    Default Famous Israeli People

    Hey guys,

I'm doing Holocaust class right now. Currently, I have to look for a biography of a notable Israeli person. But I'm out of real ideas. I'd prefer to read about military/political figures if at all possible.

Can some of you give me a few people who you think have biographies on them, and what they are famous for? Then I can go look to see if they have any books for them at my library.

    Any help will be appreciated.

You said you'd prefer a military (or political) person this is a pretty "entertaining" person...

This roadway would prove one of the main strategic hinges of the battle. It led straight from the main Syrian breakthrough points to Nafah, which was not only the location of Israeli divisional headquarters but the most important crossroads on the Heights."[21] During the night, Lieutenant Zvika Greengold, who had just arrived to the battle unattached to any unit, fought them off with his single tank until help arrived. "For the next 20 hours, Zvika Force, as he came to be known on the radio net, fought running battles with Syrian tanks—sometimes alone, sometimes as part of a larger unit, changing tanks half a dozen times as they were knocked out. He was wounded and burned but stayed in action and repeatedly showed up at critical moments from an unexpected direction to change the course of a skirmish."[21] For his actions, Zvika became a national hero in Israel.
Oh... but I don't know if there is a biography for him...

"One of the nice things about looking at a bear is that you know it spends 100 per cent of every minute of every day being a bear. It doesn't strive to become a better bear. It doesn't go to sleep thinking, "I wasn't really a very good bear today". They are just 100 per cent bear, whereas human beings feel we're not 100 per cent human, that we're always letting ourselves down. We're constantly striving towards something, to some fulfilment"

I believe it is supposed to be famous Jews in general. I don't know why I specified Israelites now that I think about it. However, Israeli history is something I think I'd like to learn a little bit about, so famous israelis is what I will try to focus my search on.

Einstein was jewish, and so were Oppenheimer and Teller. The latter two were scientists who were very important for the US' nuclear weapons program (don't believe that either were religious, though)

I think Samson would be the most suitable Israeli figure to give as a name in such a forum. A migthy quasi-legendary hero who was said to have his enormous power owing to his long hair. Look him up around. Good luck.

The Judges Gideon, Sarah, Barak and Shimshon. Kings Dawid and Salomoh.

... But these are all historical, even mythological figures. Real Israeli figures? Dawid Ben Gurion, Ze'ev Yabotinsky, Ariel Sharon, Moshe Dayan, Yonatan Netanyahu, Benyamin Netanyahu... the list goes on.

Ok, there is a need for a classification here.

Jew (selfexplainatory I think), Israeli (citizen of the state of Israel), Israelite (member of the 12 tribes of the ancient Israeli kingdoms).

So if we are dealing with Holocaust, then it is Jews on a whole. If it is Holocaust victims who then proceeded to become Israeli personas, then it is of course both Jews and Israelis. But if it basically anything connected with Israel, be it young or old, then just take your pick.

Plus a whole bunch of Jewish scientists on either side in the Cold War.
Was Marx Jewish? EDIT: nope, don't think so.

Yep, Marx was a Jew. Just like quite a lot of the Bolshevik (and Menshevik) revolutionaries. Jews first, Georgians later, and Russians all the time...

Yep, Trotsky (naturally), Kamenev (his mother wasn't Jewish, though), Zinoviev, Sverdlov (likely ordered Nicholas II's death), Uritsky (first head of the Cheka), Sokolnikov (created the U.S.S.R.'s first stable currency), Genrikh Yagoda (yet another Cheka peep), and later Kaganovich (a homie of Stalin's).

But, overall, the highest percentage they ever formed was around 6-10% in the Bolshevik Party (the so-called "Old Guard") and the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. Jewish communism, indeed...

Rosa Luxemburg, one of the leaders of the revolution in Germany was also a jew. And I seem to remember that there were a few more jews among the leadership back then.

There are some who believe that it was the communist revolution in Germany that led to Hitler's hatred for the jews, for as he saw it (through the eyes of a Freikorpsman) communist = jew.
I don't know if that was the case...

But there were a surprising number of jews in the most visible leadership. In total they might not have been too many.
