Default Prince of Persia: needs analog controller ?

I just recently started playing PoP sands of time, and while I enjoy the 'platforming' sections and the overall feel of the game, the combat is getting VERY annoying. I barely seem to able to control what my Prince does, who he's targeting and what he'll do (saving up for a time freeze is nearly impossible when he keeps stabbing enemies). Now I'm using a mouse and keyboard setup, does this get any easier with a gamepad ? Or is the combat just something you have to suffer through ?

I had no issues when using the analogue controller of a GameCube, so I guess the answer is yes, an analogue controller is necessary.

Control on the PS2 was excellent. The two sequels were also easy to control on the xbox. Analogue is Good(tm) for these types of games.

I played the game with mouse and keyboard. Worked fine for me. You just need some practice (if I remember right, the battles are very easy once you have a good timing for blocking + I used one particular special move (something like jumping against a wall, it's been a while, sorry that I'm not very helpfull)).

Finished Two Thrones recently. The controls have been real smooth and responsive throughout the series, both concerning fighting as well as the environmental puzzles. Fact is, you're gonna need those sand recalls and those responsive controls, for some of them puzzles are real killers...

Like the Tower of Babel at the end of Two Thrones. Jesus, I was sweating it big time in that joke -- not only because of the exact precision required, but also because of the heights...

I played some more, it's not that the controls are that bad, it's just frustrating to lose a recall because your Prince did something totally unexpected and rather dumb. I read on Gamespot that most controllers don't work with SoT or TT, I'm not that interested in WW (I got the triple pack btw) so I guess I'll stick with my mouse and keyboard for now.

The Wizard: Precision is required ? Damnit I like SoT because it's so forgiving ! I'm really bad at this sort of game

The wall rebound attack is indeed handy when you're ganged up on by a load of enemies.

... Like when you screw up a multiple speed kill near one of the sand portals in Two Thrones

But definitely, doc, the last "level" (not really any levels to speak of in the series, but meh) of Two Thrones is incredible. Not only of the most challenging puzzles in the game -- it's also hair-raising as the Prince jumps straight into the blue beyond coming off a wallrun on some crazy attempt to reach a rickety wooden lift hanging a good meter or five-ten off the Tower's side. Repeatedly. Amazing. My heart

Finished SoT, just started TT, but the mouse speed (even with sensitivity set to 100%) is painfully slow, killing my enjoyment of the game

Tried some WW too, encountered lots of bugs (wtf, this was released on consoles ?).

First game is definately the best.

Played SoT and WW with a keyboard with almost no problems aside from at least one moment where the change in camera angle made me keep falling down a razed tower when trying to perform a horizontal wall hop. There was another moment where it took me two minutes to get through a doorway. I see no major reason to switch.

EDIT: I did encounter some bugs in WW as well. I thought they where the most hilarious bugs I have ever seen in my life. The Prince showing up as a talking, floating head after a mishap with the time chamber was my favorite.

I turned into a sand wraith too soon, kinda funny, but also made me have to reload, and the sound just stopped during one of the cut scenes.

The controls (in WW) are alright, though the camera angels are a little weirder than in SoT, which makes controlling where the Prince goes a little harder imo. But like I said before, I'm just bad with these kind of games

Two Thrones had no glitches for me, short but incredibly sweet game.

However, SoT and WW had some serious glitches on the GameCube. The lack of patches on consoles makes it all the more frustrating.

In WW, the time chamber just before the last bloody boss failed to work, meaning I never got the chance to fight the end boss and see the flaming credits.

In SoT, in the Hall of Mirrors, after one of the (utterly boring and repetitive) fight sequences, Farah accomplished the feat of falling into a bloody flaming spike pit just as I was saving, turning any reload into an endless repeat of "that's not how it happened, I'll tell it again."

I haven't had a second go at either games since.

DO you have a joystick or something hooked up to the PC? If you do try removing that and see if it helps (worked for me).
First one is definately the best... shame really as I really enjoy the puzzles and platforming in these games (got the tripple pack as well), just the combat is really frustrating and it gets a bit repetitive at times.

Don't agree. First one's puzzles were equal to (i.e. no better than) those that followed, though some were harder. The combat is what screws it, really.

Repetitive and overly simple, the endless waves of enemies that rush you and the incredibly simplistic -- so as to become utterly boring -- combat system is really what put me off.

That -- and that damned bug described above.

The Two Thrones is the best, both aesthetically as gameplay-wise.

Fighting isn't a big part of the first game, and most of the time I found it a welcome diversion (once I figured out the wall jump).

Stealth kills in TT are fun, but actual fighting is not, it seems to take forever to take an enemy down ! I thought WW was best in the combat area (non boss fights anyway).

BTW I solved the problem by hooking up another mouse, that fixed it (and finally got me to hook up my laser precision mouse) .
