Thread: So, you've made a mod - what next?

Default So, you've made a mod - what next?

First off, upload your mod to the Org's filespace on mizus.com or another hosting site.

Second, post a new thread on this forum announcing your release.

Make sure you include the following info:

    1) Mod Name
    2) Mod Version
    3) Compatibility (e.g. Medieval 2 v1)
    4) Description/Credits
    5) Conditions of Use (see below for more info)
    6) A link to where your mod can be downloaded!

Third, add a new entry to the Mod Downloads database to ensure your mod can be found by players for years to come. Include all the info you did in your thread.

    You're done!
Make sure you keep an eye on your thread in case your players have questions or problems. Hopefully, they'll have some nice words to say about it as well!

    Conditions of Use

Conditions of use are just as they sound, the conditions under which the creator of a mod allows others to use their work in other modifications made publicly available. A modder's licence as to how they can deal with the material.

Modders are encouraged to write their personalised own conditions of use to properly express their own wishes. Alternatively, they're also welcome to use one of the following examples or icons if they so wish.

    Example Conditions of Use

Free use - You may alter and adapt this modification for other public modifications freely subject to the following conditions. It may not be used for any commercial purpose. The creator of the modification must be identified within the credits included in any release.
    Code:
[fleft]http://www.totalwar.org/Downloads/Rtw_Uploads/RTWupload/U25.GIF[/fleft][b]Free use[/b] - You may alter and adapt this modification for other public modifications freely subject to the following conditions. It may not be used for any commercial purpose. The creator of the modification must be identified within the credits included in any release.
Incorporation - This material in this modification may be included in other public modifications in a complete and unaltered state. Adaptation may only be made to the extent necessary for the material to be used as intended by the creator. These conditions can be waived with the creator's express permission. It also may not be used for any commercial purpose. The creator of the modification must be identified within the credits included in any release.

This might be used for a map mod where another modder may have to change the descr_strat file to use it for another mod or for a model which may have to be UV mapped differently to take a new skin. The importance here is that the material is used - and only used - for its intended purpose and therefore, for example, segments of a skin could not be cut out and reused to make different skins as the skin was meant to be used as a single skin and not just a texture pack.
    Code:
[fleft]http://www.totalwar.org/Downloads/Rtw_Uploads/RTWupload/INC25.GIF[/fleft][b]Incorporation[/b] - This material in this modification may be included in other public modifications in a complete and unaltered state. Adaptation may only be made to the extent necessary for the material to be used as intended by the creator. These conditions can be waived with the creator's express permission. It also may not be used for any commercial purpose. The creator of the modification must be identified within the credits included in any release.
Personal use only - The material in this modification cannot be used in any other public modification without the creator's express permission.
    Code:
[fleft]http://www.totalwar.org/Downloads/Rtw_Uploads/RTWupload/P25.GIF[/fleft][b]Personal use only[/b] - The material in this modification cannot be used in any other public modification without the creator's express permission.
    Optional additions
-- Permission for sub mods - The material in this modification can be used for public sub-modifications (derivative modifications which will not function without the original modification installed). The sub mod should not be bundled with the original modification in a single download without the express permission of the creator.
-- Permission to update version - If a new version or a patch of the game is released then the creator grants permission for the modification to be adapted only to the extent required to function with the new version and publicly released. You must attempt to notify the creator before beginning to adapt it. The updated modification must retain the original name (though with a different version number) and must identify the original creator with equal or greater prominence as the upgrader.

Note that in cases where a link to an old mod is posted and there are no conditions of use available and the modder is no longer active in the community to check with we will have to consider them Personal use only until contact with the modder is re-established.
