Most certainly am. I quite often check Smith's as well as game, being as they're so close to each other and they quite often have different prices on the same thing.

Back to the crusading thing, if you get bored of walking an didn't bring any shipping of your own, you can of course hire mercenary ships now, which was a pleasant surprise. Being able to retrain mercs is nice too.

Not seen the Pope expanding yet, might try a game with one of the Italian lot or the HRE, as they're a lot closer to Rome, territory-wise.

If you have a crusading army going through a nation your at war with, for example france...would the french be able to attack your crusading army or are they only prone to attack from islamic factions?

I am pretty sure Catholic faction cannot fight a Crusade army. I like to think that the crusade army is an army of the Papal States, being led by, for example, a French General.

Continuing the theme, I wonder if Crusading armies get a free pass for Catholic lands? I mean if you took a normal army and went stomping about nothing short of another army could actually stop you, but you would be annoying a lot of people...

In MTW you used to have the whole "the HRE welcome you crusading army and allow to pass freely" thing... And you had to give premission to other crusading armies too if they entered your lands (or fight them)...

I wonder if this is automated now...

Question: is excommunication a factor in M2TW? (as opposed to a minor annoyance)

Not got excommunicated myself so don't know. However potentially, if you get excommunicated, then your regions are then potential targets for crusades. You can do the same to other factions as well. I was particularly evil when one of my allies was excommunicated. I used the opportunity to try and call a crusade down on them so I could see if another faction would weaken some of its own armies. I would then move in and grab a region or two off the crusading faction.

Didn't work though, pope didn't particularly like me at the time and ignored my request

Looks to me like they can't attack you - I had the whole British Isles (as Scotland) and sent a crusading army through the English lands in France while at war with them. Even a full stack left it alone.

There was a scary moment when the only general leading the crusaders died. The white cross above it disappeared and I got a message saying I had one turn before the units started deserting (or was it before they all deserted? Not sure). Managed to get a replacement general over the channel and joined up in one move). So note: send a spare general with crusades.

And one thing I don't think anyone else has said: crusading armies travel at double movement speed which makes overland travel more attractive (though getting stuck in other units' zones of control is a pain).
