Once you have a family member and about 8 units (at least, I thought they state this requirement in the mission section). Once you have that army in the open field and NOT in a settlement or castle, open the army scroll and near the bottom, there should be an icon with a cross. Click that and your army has joined the crusades.
Regarding the teaming up, no, each nation just races towards the target. Let's hope you get there first and are able to win the crusade.![]()

*&%*#ing inquisitor caught up with my crusader army in Asia Minor and killed the family member leading it.Whole army deserted the following turn because they were too far from home to have a new general reach them and assume command.It is a rather cool touch which i wasn't expecting...........bloody annoyed me though.
