well tell me who you where and how many men did you have and how many did the enemy have
i was the scpii facing 3 mighty selecuid armies i had 700 troops mostly mercs and heavy inftry and some elephants and some archers and i defend a great stone fortress while the enemies had 4000 troops many mitla and some armoured and a few hoptiltes and a few elephants what i did was i let them come threw with the battreing ram and boling oil fell on their elephants and made them panic which killed alot of the enemy but they had a good chunk of men left so they charge their troops in which make excllent targets for my merc calavry for they where not in phanlx mode so i had the jump on them and many of them routed but the enemy had many calavry mostly compaion calavry and a small regemnt of general body gurad so i charge my numdain barabain sycthian and roman calavry at the seleuicd calavry and i killed their general and killed alot of them at the end i earned a herioc victory with 620 men left while the enemy had 20 guys left have any battles that you are proud of ?

Duringt his battle (which was my tenth or so as I only have the game since Saturday) I was outnumbered 3 to 1 by the gauls. At a certain moment my infantryline was flanked by a number of the gauls and I threw in my generals command to break through two units in splendid fashion and then turn on the enemies flank. They where exhausted at the end but won me the battle.

I was defending Segesta against the Gauls.
I only had Hastati, Velites (none of the units was at full strength), 2 generals and one unit of light cav, against a Gallic army consisting of pretty much only heavy infantry. (playing the SPQR mod, so no chain routs on either side)

That where some great screenies! I had a siege like it yesterday only on a smaller scale. Didn't have any missle units though. The enemies army outnumbered me three to one and I had mostly town watch, two generals and a small unit of equits.

Naturaly I couldn't stop their four battering rams at the gates. (I had only five infantry units anyway) so I decided to stop them in the streets. A blocking unit of Town watch was completely overrun and I withdrew to the Town square for a last stand forming a sollid line of infantry backed up by my cavalry to charge in in case of a gap........

Luck was on my side when a cavalry charge came first. At the moment they almost broke my line of infantry their general was killed which allowed me to throw of their cavalry units and rout them.

After that and some reforming three waves of infantry battered my line...all of them where defeated and in the end I was glorious altough I lost both of my generals and three quarters of their units + all of the cavalry and two thirds of the infantry as well......

I winned an heroic battle

I, The House of Brutii, winned a heroic victory againt The Greek Cities.

The machine was humillated, because the lossed against Mercenaries!!!
The mercenaries were Mercenary peltast, mercenary hoplites, Cretan archers and Rhodian Slingers
The machine had tho forces, the first were destroyed with everything, and the reinforcments were killed with they swords they have, or gladius.

Thay was hard, but I winned after all

A very surprising victory the other night, a few turns into my Seleucid game. My army was busy in Parthia and Egypt (following the blitz strategy - works like a charm!), so the first Armenia attack got bribed away, gaining me their cataphract unit. So I had the cataphract, a militia cav, and a militia phalanx "holding" the bridge north of Hatra along the Armenian invasion axis. Armenia attacks with a new army of a general, horse archer, and 7-8 infantry (a few hillmen, mostly eastern inf). I tried to retreat but the Armenians caught up and forced a battle.

Figuring I was doomed, I planned a suicide charge with the cav to take out the enemy general and horse archers (a pile of just hillmen/EI pose little to no threat to towns with a few mil phalanxes in place). Terrain was a huge mountain in my starting corner, so I parked my phalanx there. The AI foolishly spread into a long line and my cav actually managed to get into a pursuit (and eventually kill) the Armenian cav. The rest highlights the enormous power of exhaustion combined with low morale infantry. My jav cav shot their wad, then did the usual routine with the cataphracts where whichever one sees the rear of an infantry unit charges it and causes a quick rout. The real surprise was up on the mountain top - three EI came up to kill my phalanx. The first two attacked, got exactly the front-to-rear sandwich they needed to win - and both EI routed from exhaustion! They even re-routed after regrouping whenever my phalanx turned in their direction. This repeated in exact detail when the third EI arrived, attacking with the less damaged EI regrouped from the first attack. That phalanx killed 317 men while losing 2 (and somehow failed to gain an experience level...). The rest was just mop-up for my Very Tired cavalry. Armenians lost 940 men out of just over 1000; I lost a few dozen cavalrymen out of a total force of 188.

Good thing I didn't try to fight at the bridge - I think the mountainous terrain (and AI stupidity at the start) was key to victory.

I was playing as the Greeks and I was in some not so distant land owened by Macedonia, With me I had Four units of plain arches, eight units of infantary
6 Armoured hoplites and two hoplites and four units of Greek cavalry.
They attacked me ( Some marauding band of Brutii Idiots)
I put my men on a hill in the corner and made my hoplites stretch from corner to corner and then put the rest behind them, my hoplites were segregated so that there would be no gaps and I put them into loose formation so that I could spread them further, I let the Brutii come to me and by the end I had a lovely green row of dead green men.

That mod is TE by Lusted and the heavy cav is not as good as it is in normal unmodded RTW.

I took these last night after being attacked by the Selu's, 2 armies attempting to cross the bridge of blood without paying the toll, not a famous battle or anything, but I had a great mix of slingers / archers / and infantry to cover this bridge. I lost 8 men when the left slingers brushed one of the advancing spearmen, and a few of my mercs got stabbed: other than that, they escaped with 12 men from 2 armies of 120 and 340. ( forgot to screensave the battle score - )




I enjoy that heap of bodies just laying infront of an unperturbed army, I love bridge battles when I'm on the correct side of it

When you have merc archers and slingers they rip through infantry unit with ease. I will do a uneven battle soon. Me as rome vs 3 full stacked gaul armies.

My largest battle was playing as the Jullii quickly after turning on the Senate and taking Rome. It was pretty advanced in the game so the Brutii and Scipii had plenty of resources at their disposal to punish me for my treachery.

My first defense of Rome involved my 3/4 stack versus 3 full stacks of Scipii. They attacked all four sides of the city, but for some reason I was under the impression that only 3 of those sides were beset by seige equipment. I was so horribly wrong.

Anyways, I placed the majority of my archers along the northern wall where a good 1500 enemy soldiers were gonna attack with ladders, a ram, and seige towers. The East and West walls I put one archer unit each and a maybe two infantry units. The rest of my infanty and my General were along the north wall.

The 1500 assailing the north wall didn't stand a chance. Those not killed by my veteran Archer Auxilia were mopped up by my guard towers. I think only one of the seige towers actually touched the wall and the invading infantry were quickly dispatched.

The other walls were another story however: On the southern wall the Scipii used a ladder to scale up and then moved to capture my gateway. My only warning was the notice slowly falling down the left of my screen. Meanwhile, my Archer units and infantry units placed on my East and West walls had been wittled down some by Scipii's archers and then the battle for the walls had not gone as well as I would have liked. The men were exhausted and somehow, when I pulled them to defend the town square agains the 800 or so Scipii from the South, the west wall was captured .

My archer auxilia being useless in hand-to-hand combat I left them at their posts on the walls and tried to rush all my infantry(which still hadn't recovered even from capturing the city in the first place) and my general to the town square where I managed to take the southern Scipii in pieces and pushed them out of the city in full flight.

I do believe I managed to kill just about all the infantry and most of the cavalry. I faced off against 5 generals and killed 2 of them and sent the rest running in shame. I wish I had thought to take a screenshot, but my kills were 3000+ and my losses were only 250-300. Good battle.

This was on the regular unit size setting. 81 in a cohort, barbarian warbands are 120, around there.

I was bored so thought I'd do a cutom game between me as the senate and 3 gaul armies on large. I had my general Captin Titus, 15 units of urban cohorts, and 4 of the finest roman horsemen my denarii could buy. Gaul had one generals bodyguard and the rest we're the finist troops from all of gaul. So the stongest infantry they could have and all of the units in the game had gold attack, gold defense and 3 gold shevrons.

I set my roman army out like this for the start of the game:

Til I see actually how many gauls there we're and switched to a long single line.

As it took time for one of the gaulish armies to come to the aid of the force in the center i sent 2 units of my horsemen around the flank to kill the first general.

As you can see I killed all there generals.

Then the second one charged my cav so i just attacked him and killed him easily.


The third one was killed by cohorts as he tried to mow his way through them. I never got a screenshot of his death as i pressed the button to late.

By that time I was easily winning the battle so I just had to clean up the remaining barbarians and secure my victory.


At the start I thought I would lose this but I won it. I recieved heavy losses to my flanks as i was flanked by an army on each side.

My favourite victory, that I can remember, was defeating a Roman full stack with 2 General's Bodyguard Cav. I was the Spanish. It was large units, so I believe I defeated a 1000-strong Roman army with <50 General's Cav.

My army was actually roughly the same size as the enemy, but being such a cavalry-orientated general, I chose to just use my available cav (2 generals).

That story was pretty popular here about a year ago, it was a damn fun campaign too.

As the Scipii I owned all of spain, and then Corduba rebelled with a half stack of Gladiators :(. They attacked my army until I could not flee anymore...

I had 2 groups of Histati, and 3 Town Guard here is the setup

They charged their Gladiators into my peasants, and then I flanked with my histati, I forced 2 of their gladiators on each flank to flee with my first charge, then I wiped out the rest with my peasants

Suicide is harder than it looks!

BI, WRE - I've been looking for an army to suicide Emperor Valentinian into so my preferred pagan guy can become emperor. The ERE makes a surprise early attack and catch Valentinian in central Illyricum.

WRE: 36 Imperial German Bodyguards (understrength from overrunning rebel Spear Warband schiltroms the previous turn)
ERE: full strength units, 2 comitatenses, 1 eastern archer, 1 limitanei, the Scholae Palatinae, 1 Equites Auxilia.

Result: 13 bodyguards die, the only ERE survivors were ten (of 54) Eq. Auxilia who routed early in the battle. Valentinian is up to two silver chevrons now. There's a larger, lower quality ERE stack (mostly limitanei) nearby, maybe they can kill him off...

Part 2 of Valentinian's suicide attempts.

2 comitatenses, 1 eastern archer, 6 limitanei, 1 peasant - wiped out to a man, only three or four bodyguards killed. Same turn, he fought six units of equites auxilia, killing 80% and routing the rest, for about half a dozen bodyguards killed. Then Valentinian died of old age at the start of the next turn.

I'm thinking that BI general's bodyguards are just a wee bit overpowered...

Hi I have two battles which I will always remember...
First I was playing germans my army consist of 5spear warbands,one realy good general,one screachin women and one barbarian cavalry destroy entirly the 2full stack gaul army with 5family members and lot of cavalry and heavy infantry,my only luck was that they didnt have any forester warbands,so i post my army in half circle on the edge of the map and wait with my spearwarbands their stupid charges it was very hard becouse they have so much people,their cavalry break up my battle line,so i have a direct charge on the middle of the battle with my general and on the left by my barabriab cavalry,then when i saw that their morale is low i turned the warbands out of falanx formation and charge with them,finaly MASSIVE rout and heroic victory for my faction leader.....

And second which i like much more becouse i atack a full stack roman army(they didnt have general)but they have a reinforcment half stack army,I have a good Dacian army lead by good general he have a title mighty,but my army was outnumberd,so i have 2archer warbands,one elite swordsman,3 falxmen,2warbands and 2 tracians merceneiries,i atack first with flaming arows,than raised a warcry and focus charge on the midle with elite swordsman and falxmens this was the place where i fire up with my archers,with my tracians and warbands I atack their flanks and their cavalry so I could hold of their flanks and give time to my extremly strong middle,tjen I charged with my general throw the middle(i lose some soldiers,but it was for the greater couse)then their middle colapse and i send my general to pursue them and elite swordsman and falxmen to go and atack their flanks from behind,this was great massive rout,their reinforcments was routed straight as they joined the fight,this was my greatest victort becouse i was atacker and i didnt have cavalry or phalanxes to play like i usualy play hold of with phalanxes and then charge with cavalry,this was frontal charge and clear evidance that a good general is needed for great battles....
