Default Directions to the new world- how to get to America?

    Hi

looooong time player, first time poster.

Played the game far too much over the weekend. Playing English VH/VH.

Loving it so far, despite the odd niggle, another really fine addition to the series.

Played beyond the end of the campaign as the English, which I lost due to some turtling early on and a prolonged fight with the Danes and the French (who were replaced by the Milanese).

I've carried on playing partly because it's an engaging struggle but also to see if I could reach the New World. Has anybody got there yet ? Did you need the Explorer guild ? What triggered the Guild being offered to you ?

Played a couple of custom battles yesterday on the Myan Jungle map as the Spanish on VH as a substitute. Got an absolute pasting both times.

I'm no expert, despite many years of playing the series, but it was genuinely refreshing to be absolutely overwhelmed by the Aztec infrantry despite my technological superiority.

    So..............any directions anyone ?

    Thanks

well, I'm not 100% sure, but I'm betting you probably have to go west, somewhere around the 1400s...it might be east, I'm not sure though.

Sometime towards the end of the campain (turn 180 ish?) Sorry don't know exactly when, you will notice that the minimap in the bottom left of the campain gets an extra 20% of black nothingness added to it. I'm fairly sure there's a message at this time to hint that it's there. When that black area appears you just need to send a boat directly west from Lisbon or directly west from Ireland and you'll find it, eventually.

I have a master explorers guild on my Venetian campaign and have heard nothing. I think TanOrpheus is about right.

Around the year 1400 you will get a message that a new discovery has been made. They have discovered that "The world is round". The mini-map will open up a new part where the New World will be. I'm building a Naval Drydock at the moment so I can build Carracks (powerful ships) to get to America. I'm curious how the Aztecs are doing.

The new world is available when you build a university (in any city) also to get there, you need to build a carrack (a big boat) it's the olny ship capable of crossing the atlantic ^^

Why is Cuba about equal with Ireland on the map.CA might need to go back to geography class.

Well how else could they fit it in? The map would be huge verticaly if they placed it correctly.

No, it's just because CA only wants us to land in Central and South America, and so they want to maximize on that without having a lot of extra empty space.

It's geographically incorrect but historically on the ball

Playing as the Turks, I've noticed there's no need for a university, just build the naval dockyards after the "World is Round" event and build the newest ship available (Turkish version of a carrack). Then all you have to do is to sail west from the Gibraltar until you hit the land. Bringing some Janissaries help you conquer the natives easily and the gold is yours to grab.

ok the following must be met:

    -explorer's guild in any city
-last level navalyard in any city
-an event about craziness of a round world (copernicus thingy)

when you get that, you can send your lvl 4 (long range) ships to the west part of the map, which has now become black (but used to be just empty).
it'll take a little longer than swimming near cost, so it's gonna be 10+ turns

you can go to the carribean and florida for easy to take settllings or move to mexico to fight the crazy aztecs
they have two (I think) huge cities filled with armies and more in reserve.
they're pretty tough to fight because of their special units that are dressed as animals or look like mascots (I don't understand why that's supposed to be scary, unless your warriors just giggle so much while fighting so they don't fight so well) and cause your forces to run away.
so bring at least two full armies of your best units or you might have to be very strategically savvy to defeat them all.
in my first turn after taking one of their cities (I lost about 20% of my forces because I used tons of artillery to kill their units on the walls) I had to fight two more full armies, so eventually they kicked my ass.
I was playing as russians though and their units are not that good, but they definitely scare your forces a lot

Did you build this in a City or Castle? In the building browser, when you search from a city, it says it's only available at a castle. When you search from a castle, it says it's only available in a city... what's that all about?

Of course it is doubtful that if Iraqi soldiers dressed up as animals they'd give a scare to the US army but think of the time this happened! New land was being discovered and they had no idea what to expect. Also taking into account the superstitions, witch-hunts, etc the troops could easily have been spooked by them. In addition the ordinary troops weren't all that bright to start with.

Is the map that came with the Limited edition right? Did they really put Florida on the same parallel as Ireland?

Yes, the New World in this game is an abstract representation. Basically what CA has done is select three widely separated zones of discovery, and scrunched them together to fit in the same latitude range as the rest of the map. The sizes are way off too (Yucatan bigger than Florida??), but I assume that's just for gameplay reasons... giving you enough room to maneuver, but not so much that it's frustrating. Oh well, the first maps of the New World were pretty inaccurate too, so maybe it's not that unrealistic.

I was thinking the same thing about the maps. But if you go west from Galway, you're going to hit Boston, regardless of what the map tells you. I've been to both Ireland and Florida and, let me tell you, they have slightly different climates.

I'm curious...do AI factions head to the New World as well, or is it strictly a Player vs. Aztecs deal?

Shouldn't it be the other way around? Muskets, cannons, horses...? What was in the head of an average native american when he heard a cannon firing and seen 50 of his comrades dead...?

Any building that you cannot build yet (cannon foundry before gunpowder, naval dockyard before world-is-round) does not show up on the build browser of the selected settlement's type, but will still show up on the other build browser (the type that your selected settlement is not). So if you click on a castle before gunpowder the gunsmith won't show up, but if you flip browser tabs you will see it under city and vice versa. Am I making sense here?
