Whenever I get it (either a few days or Christmas) I'll start off with the Byzantines.

England. THose longbowmen just look so sweet and Engalnds awesome. After i beat the campaign as england i'd like to try the byzantines.
France long
HRE short
And I shall expand my horizons, probably Russia when I have unlocked the rest. All in good time
doing my duty for the kaiser!
the milans, venice, poles, danes, hungarians, sicilians all want a piece of me! france is neutral, with poor relations altough i gave them one of my princess!
the pope hated me and forced me on a crusade to antioch. made it my army is stuck there now fighting off the egyptian hordes and the turks are getting restless as well. byzantines canceld our alliance the only allie left are the russians!
i have basically no cash, cant upgrade the castles and are desperatly trying to hold the northern fronts while i wipe out the italian city states. currently stuck with mostly militas and peasant archers, a few seargents and mercs. every battle is tooth and nail fight. lose it and the whole front will collapse. burn the holy land to fill my coffers for the ever demanding bloodbath in europe. next turn could be a bad day for vienna, a huge hungarian stack full of feudal foot knights is laying siege to it. two enemy ex-crusader armys are on the italian peninsula and will surely take a look at my citys in northern italy. my only stack in the region just led a succesful crusade to palermo and crushed those sicilians once and for all!![]()
i thought the unsucessful crusades would disband - oh well this will be interesting. i had already several situations (multiple enemy attacks on all fronts, deep in the red, failing a pope mission) where i was close to giving up thinking HRE is a bit hard for my first M2TW game. but so far its the most interesting and challenging TW game i had since MTW!![]()
I tried the Turks, bit ruff with the Byzantines attacking me right off the bat.
knock down drag em out fight, really got nasty when Egypt came up to have some fun as well.
I play:
England
Russia
Scotland
Spain
The Turks
Venice
Just for now of course, once I finish one I'll switch to another.
Im also trying to figure out a way to make the Aztecs playble. Anybody have any ideas? Its been my dream since I heard that they were included in the game to invade Spain with them ;)
Tallyho lads, rape the houses and burn the women! Leave not a single potted plant alive! Full speed ahead and damn the cheesemongers!
England? Bah, french wannabee-imperialists.
I completed the grand campaign as Spain, did Russia for a while... now trying my hand at Denmark. Oh yeah, I started off as Venice, but was forced to quit - being at war with Milan, the Holy Roman Empire, Byzantium AND Siciliy all at once was just too hard.
Started as English now with Venice, boy are they different!
I play HRE and it rocks. I -as a usual nomad style player- find myself loving`'em knights, Teutonic Order BAs, the huge fortresses etc....
Next, if unlocked by my nasty German rudeboys, I would love to play one of the more Eastern empires [Byz, Russia....] and by that unlock the Islamic factions....then it is Jihad time again & nothing but a bow, an arrow & a horsey...

First campaign with england because (a) i'm english, (b) theyve got some cool units (c) theyre in a nice position to start learning the game, and (d) red and gold looks cool.
Once i'm done with my first game it'll be different - russians/turks/danes... etc
I'm doing a campaign as Sicily now and I'm loving it. Nothing beats Norman Knights and an Island right in the middle of the map.
Next time, I want to try either the Byzantine Empire, the Russians or the Danes. And Venice is on my list too.![]()

I've got campaigns going as Venice, Russia, Sicily and England. Though i am currently playing the Venice one mostly.

I've tried Venice but having a problem with a cheeky inquisitor killing all my generals![]()
Started a Byzantine game last night and so far it looks good.
May try the Russians soon as well![]()
I did start with England the very first time. Wanted something i would be familiar with. Then started a few campaigns with other just to get the feeling of them. Now i am playing Portugal. Won't let go for awhile.
Next will probably be the Turks, my favorite MTW faction, but from what i've seen they will be somewhat different (weaker Jannisaries, only one kind).
started as the HRE but that campaign looked bleak very fast, so abandoned it and had fun with the Turks
Byzantines Baby!
Like how they are surrounded by factions that don't really like them.
Was finally able to play last night and this is not your father's MTW though it seems to be in good ways so far.

Here's my story:
I got the game yesterday and I started a campaign as Portugal. I really didn't want to play as Portugal, I just used them for my 15 turn "practice" campaign to get the feel of the game. Today when I get home from my working of 14 hours today, I will probably start a campaign with my favorite faction, the Byzantines. There are a few factions that I really like, and they are:
The Byzantines
Holy Roman Empire
England
Spain
Denmark
I want to try a faction that I really wouldn't normally play as such as Milan or somthing random like that. I will be debating all day in my mind as to what faction to start with tonight.

When I get the game I'll be giving all nations a shot. Can you go Scotland normally? Or do you have to mod a file?

Started as English, its a good start campaign IMO, how the hell have people got so many nations they can play?? I've started England and only destroyed the Scots so thats the only 'new' faction that i can be ... Portugal was taken by Spain (the last city, lisbon, i had taken the others) will that now be available to me?
I want to try out the Turks and the Moors probably have to be spain to take them now ... Russia and the Poles ... hell I want to play them all :)
Unfortunately I'm a methodical player and have to check everything in a turn twice. Takes a long time and although most of western Europe is mine I can probably take out Milan to be them and maybe Siciliy but I may make it yet and take Byzantium and the Turks :)
I went into the descr_strat.txt and moved everything from the "unlockable" section into the "playable" section. By default, there's only 5 factions you can play in your first game, but I was starting with Byzantium, dammit!
Age and treachery will defeat youth and skill every time.
What Quillan said, just go into desc strat and mod it. I'm not much of a modder, but this is really easy to do.

Ahhh, no thats OK I thought this thread was filled with insomniacs driven vy caffine/M2TW addictions ... just M2TW addicts then hehe
I'll unlock them as I go, not for any other reason than I'll be playing this until the next in the series comes out ;)
I did my first campaign as the English, but that was just maybe a dozen fast, careless turns, mainly exploring the menus and reacclimating myself with the game after a long break from TW games. Now I'm about three or four provinces away from my first campaign victory with France.
English history fascinates me, I think I'm a bit of an Anglophile by nature, but when I think of Medieval I think of thundering cavalry with gleaming armor and long, deadly lances, so France was the natural choice.
Plus, with the passive AI bug, it doesn't seem to be very fun to play the English yet, since the obvious strategy is to pepper the enemy with arrows as they charge. Since the AI never attacks, I don't feel like you can even play this faction properly until this is fixed. More of an exploit right now, imo.
I am installing the game now, I just put in the second disc. I'm curious which faction I will start as; Spain, England or Danes are my first choices.
I'll let you know which one I choosed and when I'm done with the first campaign![]()
my first choice was France but those aggrevating accents really makes them unplayable, that and in my first campaign i got put betwen the rest of the world and a hard place, sufice to say, i lost it when the world wanted me dead...:pschh. just because some guys in funny hats says too![]()
