I have never used D2D, but the main drawback is the delay in patches. You can't use the regular patch for D2D games, and usually it's a while before the specific patch for the download version comes out. The only one I'm familiar with that was different was one of the later patches for Ghost Recon, which when you installed it had a drop box for selecting "I have the disk version of the game/I have the downloaded version of the game". D2D games don't have a disk check when you start it. If you use the normal patch, it will put the check back in, so the game won't run. It'll just ask you to put the original disk in the drive.
