MTW II Technical Issues: a rant...

Well, if the acknowledged issue that one has to uninstall their DVD writing software before being able to install MTW II (in order to bybass their new security system) is not enough... tonight (after having played MTW II fine for 24 h), the game appeared to have "cooked" my sound drivers... and in such a manner that even after reinstall of original drivers, i wouldn't be able to get any sound out of my speakers... The "solution" seems to install the original sound drivers from the CD that came with the computer, play, and, God Forbid, do not reboot the PC... otherwise - no sound again...

I havent heard of the problems with DVD writing software before and if that is the case I wont be buying M2TW since I need to use such software almost everyday to backup my work (even if I didnt need to use it I wouldnt buy a game with such a requirement though - just on principle). The M2TW (and other games) safedisc4 security will conflict with virtual drives and the software that creates them but they can be worked around. I understand SEGA's desire to reduce game piracy but again I wont buy a game that requires me to change how I legally use my PC.

I recommend Daemon Tools to mount images.

I didn't have to remove Roxio in order to install M2TW.

The issue about some people having to remove their DVD writing software to be able to install MTW II is acknowledged at .com. I believe, it is a copy-right-protection code on the game DVD that triggers this.

On my first try, the DVD drive did not recognize there were ANY files on the MTW II disks... Quite frustrated I started to browse .com tech support forum and there it was: many people appear to have the same problem. After following a suggestion there to uninstall the DVD writing software (mine was Sonic) I was able to install the game fine.

They have mentioned DVD writing software but Nero and other programs that allow virtual DVD drives are the ones that seems to be most common. The fact that you had to remove Sonic (fairly common and innocuous burning software) because of SEGA's-copy-protection-overkill in order to install a game you purchased is outrageous IMO. As far as I can tell, this behaviour is simply forcing more players to find 'alternate' versions of the game. I would guess that the sheer size of the game will deter more piracy than safedisk4.

BTW, have you re-installed Sonic 9and does the game still work) and are you using DLA for your DVDRW (which I do) ?

No, I have not reinstalled my Sonic yet (got the game on Thursday and I do not do much work on my game computer). However, from my readings on the .com site - the results are mixed after reinstalling writing and/or virtual drive software. Some people are able to run the game - others are not... And, yes - I had to uninstall my DLA (it was part of the Sonic package) to be able to install MTW II.
