I have had a couple battles in which I couldn't possibly win. Once into the battleground screen, I wanted to hit the withdrawal button, but it is always grayed out. How do I withdraw units once on the battlescreen?

There are some battles you simply cant withdraw from mate. If you could back away from every single confrontation the AI would never be able to force you to fight on its terms.

Best thing is just to knuckle down & try to take as many of them with you as possible.
I found this with the mongols, got into the 'Make the buggers pay' mentality and it worked. Killed their khan :) which removed an annoying assassination mission for him aswell so it was a big bonus (the guy was very paranoid).Originally Posted by Prodigal
If you move your army to its fullest extent in a turn you have no choice of withdrawl if attacked becuase you've used all your movement for that turn. A nice strategical restriction there especially in wooded northern europe when armies can be hiding anywhere.
