We have/had the same thing going in France with Joan of Arc (who else ? :) ). According to legend, during her travels at the head of her army she had a vision of a church and its altar. The church itself was insignificant if I remember clearly (small no-name village church, not say the Cathedral of Chartres), but they say that behind the altar she removed a paving slab and found a rusty sword. When she took it in her hands, the rust vanished. I can't remember whose sword it was supposed to be though.

Of course everyone deemed it a miracle, morale soared, the english were routed afterwards etc...

I've always wondered if it was an elaborate plot on the part of Joan :
- "oh, look, a church, let's go pray ! *shuffle shuffle* Guys ! I found a miraculous sword, isn't it neat ?!"
- "You planted that !"
- "Nu-uh !"
, or an "urban legend" dating from way back that was being retold.

And of course, there's the matter of the pieces of the True Cross, which were so numerous in Christendom the Cross must have been the size of a boat ;)
i heard that story in the AOE2 Joan of Arc campaign. and there must be pieces of the True Cross.
