Where's the Pope?

Playing my first campaign as Milan and I am doing very well, and I felt compelled to take all of Italy. I was surrounding Rome so I couldn't resist taking the pope out. So I did. When I took Rome the pope was killed. Well, 2 turns later there were papal elections and I and I voted and whatnot. The next turn I turned off the fog of war to see where on the map the new pope was staying and I couldn't find him at all. Am I missing somthing here? Doesn't the pope take a settlement from another catholic faction? If that's the way it works I sure couldn't find him....

I notice that after the first pope, I can never seem to FIND the pope to assasinate him!

I haven't cheated (turned off fog of war) to check, but is it possible this is an issue in the game?

Perhaps he is with the faction he orginally was from? Say the new pope was Polish, maybe he is somewhere in Poland?

Yeah I turned the fog of war right back off too, but I couldn't find him at all. Very interesting.

I have had three of my cardinals elected to pope in a row as France, and I tell you now, they disappear and I cannot find them! Spies, diplomats canvass all of Italy to no avail.

I've captured Rome about 5 times in different campaign, and so far the AI catholic factions have never given him a new province, but in my campaign the new pope always appears somewhere in the middle of Italy, without any army.
