    Default same unit rendering

Is it just me or do lots of units have the same rendering. Example heavy billmen looks the same as heavy bill militia. billmen looks the same as bill militia. French Sergeant Spearmen looks the same as french spear militia. etc
have anyone else noticed this? I have a feeling that its just my game is screwed up.

    please reply

Yeah, there are a lot of similarities like that. There may be some very minor differences if you look hard enough, but most of the time they are pretty much the same.

As are the stats. The big difference seems to be the free upkeep for militia. wikiman on the .com forum challenged a poster, asking whether they were they really the same on the battle - so there may be a difference in morale. But somehow I doubt it - they feel the same on battle. For England, for example, I suspect Levy spearman=spearman militia. I don't have a problem with that though (a man with a pointy stick is a man with a pointy stick).

Kind of off-topic, but for England, in custom battle they have Armored Sergeants, but they're nowhere to be found in the campaign. And I don't think they're supposed to either because it's not in the unit recruitment list poster thingy that came with the game. Weird why they're included in the custom battle roster.

But anyhoo, Levy Spearmen are exactly the same as Militia except for the upkeep as econ mentioned. Kind of weird stuff with some areas of the game, but of course, the great modding communities will fix all that.

Although, ironically, a unit of yeoman archers with upgraded armour looks completely different to a unit of yeoman archers without.

Yeoman archers with upgraded armour look like Retinue Longbowman, heh. Seems like kind of a cheap way to recycle models and skins I suppose, but hell, long as it allows for modders to make more out of it it's all good.

Hmmm... I can see where you guys are coming from on this, but I also think that we might be expecting too much variety...

You have to remember that while medieval armies would certainly have looked rather ad hoc, a general basic appearance still had to be maintained in order to keep oneself oriented in battle. Wearing heraldric patterns as identification doesn't work if everyone comes up with their own. In the end, it didn't really matter what you wore so long as you kinda looked like everybody else - so a group of 3 Brits might be wearing, say, a yellow lion rampant on a red background, a white rose on a red background, and yellow-and-red-checks, and while when you just look at the three of them they look like they're all on their own, when you put them in a large battle where they're fighting those evil French in their blue uniforms then they're suddenly all for the same team.

If you start actively looking for the individual differences among soldiers in a group, then you may find yourself going "Hey, these guys look the same" - but first off 1) there's almost ALWAYS something different, usually the shield and 2) when you watch your knights charge the enemy or your infantry in a melee suddenly the differences become vastly more apparent as compared to RTW.

I'm actually very much so pleased with the way they handled the situation, regardless of a few recycled skins here and there. It's more true to historical Medieval form than some of us might want to believe or admit, but that's how it was.
