Default How to get to the Americas/Aztecs?

Does anyone know how to get past the dark part of the map to the West? Like some desert areas, the sea beyond Western landmass seems completely inaccessible. Playing with Milan allowed me to sail a bit around the edge of Africa (no where near the Americas though) (turn ~120) but so far with Turks (turn ~70) I can't even do that. May it's just cause i haven't reached the gun powder age with the Turks yet... In the meantime i wonder if the ability to sail in open ocean faction specific... say with Spain in late game, do you get to sail across the Atlantic?

Reply ASAP if you know how to get to the Americas/Aztecs! Thanks in advance.

You need the map to grow larger and receive a message saying "New lands to the west" or something. You also need a Caravel or Grand Carrack (Spain) or a Carrack (everyone else) to make the journey.

Not sure which is the chicken and which is the egg, but I know that you need all of that in some combo.

Wait for the "The World is Round" event. It happens in the 161th turn (in my Sicily campaign). But I think it enables anyone to build ships that can cross the Atlantic, you´ll need to upgrade your ports for those ships.
