1. You can't fight anyone without the risk of being excommunicated, while the other factions can do as they please!!!!!!

2. Every time you take a settlement in the Middle east and build loads of priests to convert to catholicism, the papalcy sends out an inquisitor and kills off all your priests.. absolutely stupid....

3. You call crusades and an inquisitor comes along and kills your family member and you lose a whole army....

This game is terrible.......

1. The other factions can't do as they like. I have seen many of them being excommunicated. I even had the HRE excomm'ed when the Pope told me to make peace with them within 7 turns. I pulled all my troops out of the HRE and sent a diplomat. His offer of ceasefire was rejected. On the next turn they attacked me and promptly got excomm'd. Looked to me like the game had taken in to acount the fact that i had done all I could to let peace break out.

2. You need to build more and better religious buildings. They have a positive impact on the % of catholicism in a province. Inquisitors appear in ares of high heresy, so if the impact your priests have isn't fast enough they will appear. Buildings will help convert an area quicker and reduce the chances of inquisitors appearing. Your priests will increase in skill over time

1. You need to build your forces and bide your time, taking rebel settlements and waiting for your enemies to make a mistake with the Pope. And if that sounds dull, it isn't, because they make alot.THEN you can strike, fully justified and with no fear of repurcussions.
Understanding how to do this directly negates the problems you mention in points 2 and 3.

I had a crusade leading general with 0 piety and some kind of negative piety witch in his retinue, but as I had followed the plan outlined above, he passed 7 or 8 inquisitors on his journey and wasn't bothered once.

Its the GAME thats at fault. You shouldnt be expected to have to learn how to play - you should just win automatically, and never have anything bad happen to you in the game, ever.

Well, I for one would love to have my entire faction wiped out by inquistors while I'm excommunicated...Unfortunatly a certain company named after a very long river have deemed me unworthy of any form of "service"

Assassins, build a bucket load & hurl them at inquisitors. Attack! Take the excommunication like a man, take the land you want, then go toady up to the Pope by slipping the sticky fingered goober some cash over a period of time.

It also depends on your current Pope's 'violence' levels. If they are aggresive then many factions will become excomm'd and you seems to get less peace missions from the Pope. At one point (under a aggresive pope (also same faction as me)) all the factions I was at war with were excomm'd (for attacking me a lot) and had a large military campaign to annexe many of their regions that wasn't stopped until the Pope died.

Now I have a placid traited Pope who, as the previously excomm'd factions are now reconciled, has given me 3 peace missions at the same time (for Denmark/Spain/HRE) with the threat of excom or decreased relations even though I have very good relations with the Pope (he's also of my faction) and the other factions do not.

I've only had one general and one priest tried for heresy and executed so far and I'm at least two thirds of the way through my campaign.

I'd suggest trying a faction that A) Isn't Catholic or B) has borders with non-Catholic factions.

I've had loads of occasions where I've thought the same thing - but then I actually checked things out. I'm always getting told off by the pope and told to chill for X turns, then getting really wound up because they're blockading my port and if i attack them I get excommunicated.... but - if I check then there standing has gone down loads, or they've been excommunicated themselves. So yes, the AI can do what they want, but they suffer the same consequences as you.
