Hello, newbie question

As i play the game and my population grows, it notifies me that i can upgrade my settlements into bigger towns, and cities etc.. however i cant for the life of me figure out how to upgrade them.. does it happen automatically? in the building selection there is nothing about upgrading cities, only converting to fortresses.
so, how do you upgrade into bigger cities?

which game are you playing, stw, mtw, rtw or m2tw?

i know in rtw that buildings need to be built to upgrade a town. it tends to be the farthest to the left in the buildings options thing.

when a town is large enough to upgrade - goto the building construction panel for that city - in the top left of the buildings available should be either a larger wall (in case of a city) or a larger castle (castle) - these can be expensive so it may be greyed out if you dont have the florins. Once youve upgraded you may find new building options available or a guild may be offered
